Senna's NSX Heading to Auction This OctoberRM Sotheby'sRacing drivers have a knack for becoming larger-than-life figures. Their otherworldly skills, the inherent danger of wheel-to-wheel battles, and the fierce competition in the world of motorsport makes wheelmen and wheelwomen easy to idolize. Arguably, no driver has ever been adored quite like three-time Formula 1 world champion Ayrton Senna—and this fall, thanks to RM Sotheby's, one die-hard fan will have a chance to take home the ultimate piece of hero worship in the form of Senna's own 1991 Honda NSX.Even if you aren't that familiar with the nitty-gritty details behind Honda's mid-engined supercar, you've probably heard a thing or two about Senna's involvement with its development. Honda and Senna's working relationship started in 1987, when the automaker began supplying engines for his Team Lotus race car. Senna jumped ship to McLaren for 1988, and Honda was on the books at the supplier there, too. (His time with McLaren would later be commemorated by the car that bears his name, the McLaren Senna.)The turbocharged 1.5-liter V-6 would power the Brazilian to his first driver's title in 1988 with a record-setting eight race victories over the season. Senna's teammate Alain Prost would (controversially) win in 1989, but Senna secured his place among the greats by taking the 1990 and 1991 titles. He became the youngest driver to secure three world titles up until that point. Before he had all the titles, however, Honda brought Senna to Suzuka Circuit in 1989 to have a go in the brand's upcoming "New Sportscar Experimental"—a.k.a. NSX—model. Ayrton would ultimately tell the team that the car's chassis was a bit too fragile for his liking, which caused Honda to increase the structural rigidity by 50 percent before the road car went on sale. Senna would also play a role in the suspension tuning for the car over the course of test days at Suzuka and the 'Ring.AdvertisementAdvertisementAs part of their contract, Honda and Senna had an agreement in which the racing driver would be supplied with a Honda NSX for personal use. This particular car, "SX-25-59", was given to the driver for use in Portugal. He drove the car to the Portuguese Grand Prix at Estoril himself, making for some iconic imagery, and it even featured in the documentary Ayrton Senna: Racing Is In My Blood.RM Sotheby'sThe car itself is now being offered as part of RM's The London Auction event, and will cross the block on October 31. You're gonna need more than a Honda-sized budget to take the thing home, however, as the car is estimated to sell for between $680,000 and $1 million+. That would be a high-water mark for the NSX ... but given some of RM's recent results in Monterey, it honestly seems like sort of a bargain. You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
