The Rivian R2 features the brand's iconic look and design ethosRivianThe Rivian R2 is one of the most anticipated new cars to hit the market in recent years. A smaller, more affordable version of Rivian's luxury electric SUV, it alighted the aspirations of legions of buyers for whom the larger Rivian R1S was just too much—too large or too pricey. On first glance, the reviews, which began to flood news and social media feeds this week, are overwhelmingly glowing. "The 2027 Rivian R2 entirely changes the EV game," says Ars Technica; "I Had High Expectations For The Rivian R2. It Still Blew Me Away" says InsideEVs. The 2027 Rivian R2 is "annoyingly good" claims MotorTrend. Reddit threads echo with excited chatter. But there's a lot riding on the release of this third model from Rivian. With a slowing EV market, faltering or pivoting competitors, billions in debt and huge ambitions, the diminutive Rivian R2 has a big job ahead. The Smaller, Less Pricey Rivian R2 Is More Than Just A New ModelFor any car maker, producing a smaller, less expensive version of a popular SUV would be a logical next step. But anticipating the need to also develop a marketplace advantage, "Rivian has become more vertically integrated, developing its own silicon and moving quickly and aggressively on autonomous drive technologies and AI," said Ed Kim, president and chief analyst of automotive research firm AutoPacific.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's a good start, but enough to propel Rivian past the obstacles? "The 2027 Rivian R2 electric SUV has to be nothing less than the company's breakout vehicle," said EV expert John Voelcker of ChargedEVs.The rear of the Rivian R2 features a retractable rear window with a hidden windshield wiperRivianEVs Are A Growing Market That Upstart Rivian Dominates"There are lots of battery-electric startups that couldn't survive the brutality of the auto industry, but Rivian is one that perseveres, along with Lucid," said Tom Murphy, a noted automotive expert and senior writer at CarBuzz. "Lucid has sold about 32,000 EVs since launching in 2021. Rivian also launched in 2021 but has delivered 175,000 vehicles in that time, all of them R1T and R1S. Meanwhile, GM has a dozen BEVs and in total over those five years they've sold only 100,000 units as of early May. Let that sink in. The new R2 matters because it's extremely capable and more affordable, primed for higher volumes."Despite Rave Reviews, The Rivian R2 Has Heavy Lifting To DoLAGUNA BEACH, CALIFORNIA - MARCH 07: (L-R) Chief Design Officer of Rivian Jeff Hammoud and Founder and CEO of Rivian RJ Scaringe speak onstage during the Rivian Reveals All-Electric R2 Midsize SUV event at Rivian South Coast Theater on March 07, 2024 in Laguna Beach, California. (Photo by Phillip Faraone/Getty Images for Rivian)Getty Images for Rivian"With the challenging EV sales environment, simply making great EVs arguably isn't enough to sustain a startup EV maker," said Kim. Anticipating the need to develop a marketplace advantage, "Rivian has become more vertically integrated, developing its own silicon and moving quickly and aggressively on autonomous drive technologies and AI. The R2 is a major part of Rivian's expansion within Rivian's core automotive business."But even with a superior product, Rivian has a lot on the line. "Rivian has lost about $5 billion each year since 2022. Since Q2 2025, Rivian has finally been posting gross quarterly profits," Murphy said. Rivian will need a significant number of its estimated 200,000 reservation holders to convert to purchases to drive profits. The interior of the Rivian R2 is minimalist and modern, inspired by it's larger sibling the R1RivianThe R2 Became A Study On EfficienciesPart of the savings that Rivian should see fall to the bottom line came from the R2's design challenge: streamlining many of its systems, reducing parts and generating more power from the battery pack—which is about 40% more efficient than the R1 battery system. In all Rivian removed 2.3 miles of wiring per vehicle and, paired with other efficiencies, reduced overall weight. The R2 is about 15" shorter than the R1S but weighs about 2,000 lbs. less, weighing in about the same as the Toyota 4Runner while the Rivian R1S weighs about as much as a Chevy Tahoe.AdvertisementAdvertisementMany of those efficiencies also resulted in design changes that also reduced the price of the R2. But could they preserve the Rivian ethos of modern, minimalist interiors and carbon-free fun?The wide rear seat in the Rivian R2 offers more leg room and Rivian's signature woven floor mats, adding to its trademark lookRivianTo deliver on the Rivian ethos, Jeff Hammoud, Rivian's chief of design, and his team crafted a Rivian-esque interior, swapping pricier materials for less expensive ones but sticking to the brand's notable design. The cabin is anchored by a central touchscreen; a smaller touchscreen sits behind the steering wheel. Rivian rethought the steering wheel, swapping buttons for vertical dials. Function was added to the center console with a lower drawer, pop-out cup holders and a magnetic wireless phone charge pad. There are two spring-loaded glove boxes, reducing weight with fewer components while increasing storage. The cabin is covered by a glass roof and the rear seat offers more space for passengers than the second row of the R1s, a factor that will be pleasing to buyers craving space for kids car seats or tall passengers. Then Rivian filled the R2 with lots of goodies, such a retractable rear window, a large front trunk, side turn signals and flashlights or hand warmers tucked into the sides of the front doors.AdvertisementAdvertisementAll of this is capped by the iconic carabiner-shaped headlight and front and rear light bars. The look is distinct and belies the SUV's mid-$50,000 price tag.The rear spoiler of the Rivian features air channels to maintain the boxy look and shape but enhance aerodynamicsRivianBuilt To Capture The Heart Of The SUV Market"Tall and square, the five-seat compact utility vehicle is aimed at the heart of the U.S. market," said Volecker of the R2's design; buyers have proven again and again they prefer SUVs with a more rugged, classic look. And in terms of power and range, the R2 promises up to 345 miles range and a power rating of 350 hp at the low end and 656 hp in the top-tier Performance model. And it's priced at the middle of the market; customers who ordered the top of the line Performance will pay about $57,990; the Premium model, available later this year, is priced at $53,990. The Standard all wheel drive, available in early 2027, will be priced at $48,490 and next summer Rivian promises the most affordable model, the Standard rear wheel drive model will be priced at $44,990, but it'll have a reduced range of 275 miles. The R2 "essentially what we expected: a thoroughly competent electric SUV that is very clearly Rivian in looks, technology, and performance. With what [CEO RJ] Scaringe termed 'a very, very large backlog' of orders on the books, you may see a lot of R2s on the roads relatively soon," said Voelcker.AdvertisementAdvertisementStill, there may be customer complaints ahead. "The initial batch of R2 models won't have the LIDAR that will be standard on R2 later this year, meaning these early models won't likely be able to handle full hands-off/eyes-off L4 autonomy that the LIDAR-equipped models will be able to do once it's available via over-the-air update," said Kim. "If you see full autonomous drive in your future, wait until later in the year for a LIDAR-equipped model. It won't do L4 autonomous driving initially, but in time that capability will be downloadable."But once the company gets the full line into production and on the road, customers will be happy and the company will be on track as planned—if early opinions are any indication. This article was originally published on Forbes.com
