Image: Polestar Image: Polestar The next Polestar 4 variant arrives this year, and it will add a rear window-and an extra dash of cool. Polestar has big plans. The Swedish brand already confirmed two new models arriving by 2028: the 7 compact SUV along with the next-generation 2 sedan. It also teased a future variant of the Polestar 4, and it looks like the compact coupe-over will be ditching its most controversial feature: the lack of a rear window. Check out the lead image to see what we mean. The half-open garage door gives us a sliver of the new shape above the waistline, and it's already clear that we're seeing headrests through actual glass there. As good as the digital rearview mirror was when we recently drove the Polestar 4, there's no arguing with the added usability of actually being able to see behind the car. But look further up, behind the glazed glass of the garage door: are those roof rails? "Polestar 4 coupé is our current best-seller. Already by the end of this year, we will launch a new variant of Polestar 4, based on the same great technology," said Michael Lohscheller, Polestar CEO, in an accompanying statement. "With this car, Polestar will once again set new standards. Sweden is famous for its estate cars, and its SUVs are world-class. We are combining the space of an estate and the versatility of an SUV with the dynamic performance that is Polestar." It certainly sounds like the Polestar 4 is getting a whole different shape, one more in keeping with the classic Swedish wagons of yore. Right as Volvo is killing off its wagons in North America, Polestar might just pick up the baton. This isn't even the first electric wagon we've talked about this week; Toyota's got its own now in the shape of the bZ Woodland. No other information was provided for this new Polestar 4 model, but expect details over the coming months, with a launch happening by the end of the year. Our Take: The Polestar 4 is already a fun and interesting car to drive, but its shape makes it a niche offering. Adding another body style is a low-cost way to broaden appeal, and the larger Polestar 3 still exists to capture the more traditional SUV buyer.
