The dawn of the planet of electric cars has made many spectacular promises — cleaner mobility, affordable drives, and maintenance costs so low that even Scrooge McDuck would be impressed. The rise and spread of battery-powered cars has been heralded as the next giant step in the personal transportation arena, with governments across the globe providing various incentives and most manufacturers adding electric options to their lineup. As a result, 17 million electric cars were sold the world over in 2024, as per the latest edition of the International Energy Agency's 'Global EV Outlook', published in May of last year. The IEA report further highlighted that electric cars in 2024 had a 20 percent share in all new car sales globally. The United States (U.S.) has been one of the leading markets for electric cars, second to China and ahead of Germany, France, and Norway, as per the same IEA report. But while the world continues to embrace electric cars, all is not celebratory in America because, on rather expected lines, electric vehicle (EV) sales plunged in the first quarter of 2026. The main reason?End of federal tax credit. Why is this significant? Customers don't qualify for credit of up to $7,500 under Internal Revenue Code Section 30D. So what does it mean? The EV cost of acquisition is now significantly higher than before. Are all EVs impacted? Hold on, not really. Electric Shock For Electric Car Sales Lexus The One Big Beautiful Bill, passed in July 2025, spelled the end of federal tax credit on any EV sold after September 2025. This was always going to adversely impact new EV purchases from October onward. And it did. As per data revealed by Cox Automotive, Americans purchased 28 percent fewer EVs in the first quarter of this year than in the same period of 2025. Total sales of EVs in America in Q1 2025 were 216,399 units, with almost every major carmaker reporting lower figures for their electric car lineup.Volkswagen As per Reuters, Ford's EV sales in Q1 2026 were down 71 percent, while General Motors reported 19 percent lower EV sales vis-à-vis figures from Q1 2025. BMW's EV sales were down 60 percent, while Volkswagen's sales spiraled by a whopping 90 percent. Volkswagen even announced it would end the assembly of the electric ID.4 crossover SUV at its Chattanooga facility from April onward.Tesla Even Tesla, the biggest EV player in America and one of the biggest in the world, reported an 8.4 percent year-over-year decline in sales, its lowest quarterly sales since late 2021, although it did manage to increase its market share due to the 'bloodbath' in the overall American EV market. So, while the significant role played by the federal tax credit in influencing EV purchases in the past is amply clear, is the era of EVs over at the starting line? One particular electric car begs to differ, beating past market odds. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 Is Selling Like The Tax Credit Never Left Hyundai Unlike its rivals, Hyundai managed to scrape out a one-percent increase in its Q1 2026 performance, with total sales of 205,388 units in America. This was the company's strongest first quarter for total sales ever and stands in sharp contrast to the overall gloom in the market. In particular, sales of its hybrids and fully electric cars in the month of March helped Q1 figures go from red to green. And one particular model, the Hyundai Ioniq 5, fared the best in the family.HyundaiIoniq 5 created a new personal record in Q1 of 2025 with sales of 8,611 units. Even minus the federal tax credit now, the model bettered that figure for another new personal record with sales of 9,790 units in Q1 2026. On the surface, this is remarkable. But look deeper, and it's clear that Hyundai's smart pricing strategy in the post-federal tax credit age has worked like a charm. Pricing Plays Pivotal Part Hyundai The high from Ioniq 5's record sales in 2025 and plans to increase production at its Georgia EV plant were always going to suffer a setback once the federal tax credit on EVs was dissolved. Hyundai saw the writing on the wall and was quick to announce deep discounts on the Ioniq 5 to ensure it remains a lucrative option for potential customers. How? The company claimed that increased local production as well as lower manufacturing costs allowed it to pass on the benefit to customers.Hyundai While the base 2025 Ioniq 5 carried an MSRP of $42,600, the base 2026 model came in at an MSRP of $35,000. That's a super cool discount of over $7,000. Yes, around the same amount that the federal tax credit promised in those good ol' days! The discounts are valid on all trims of the Ioniq 5, which means that even the long-range AWD trims are now significantly more affordable than before. In fact, Hyundai is going the extra mile to sweeten the deal at every corner with a lower leasing price — down to a monthly payment of $259 for the 2026 Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range as against $380 for the 2025 model, zero interest on financing for up to 72 months, zero down payment, and zero payments for the first 90 days. Processed through Hyundai Motor Financing, the company says this takes total savings on all trims of Ioniq 5 to up to $8,750 for all eligible buyers with a high credit rating.Hyundai The Koreans have also announced a leasing scheme under which a base 2026 Ioniq 5 SE Standard Range can be driven home at a monthly payment of $259, down from around $400 previously. Subsequently, all other trims have also received cuts in leasing prices. Hyundai Ioniq 5 Price Comparison *All prices are starting MSRP/Source: HyundaiUSA There's A Catch! Hyundai If you are getting an updated car model at a significantly lesser price point, it may seem like a deal too good to be true. But in the case of the Ioniq 5, it is indeed true and is what powered its sales through Q1 2026. There are a bunch of terms and conditions, as would be expected, of course, but the biggest of them all is hard to miss. Hyundai, on its official website, has clearly mentioned that all current offers on the model are valid till April 30. Whether the company decides to extend this deadline based on customer sentiments and feedback remains to be seen. Hyundai's Fantastic 5 Hyundai The most lucrative of deals would amount to zilch if a product is not inherently solid. Thankfully for Hyundai, the Ioniq 5 has always enjoyed a good reputation since its first launch in 2021, faring well even in the pre-owned market. The U.S. was one of the first markets to welcome the model. While it has made its way to several global markets since, covering India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, Canada, and countries in the Gulf and Europe, one of its strongest fan bases remains in the US. Ioniq 5 Sales Scoresheet In The U.S. While the Ioniq 5 N has also made its way to the US and is aimed squarely at those prioritizing performance over range, it is the more affordable Ioniq 5 that has really set the benchmark in its segment. The first model to roll out from Hyundai's e-GMP platform that is exclusive to electrics, the Ioniq 5 has received praise galore for its unique exterior design, feature-packed cabin that is also spacious, refinement levels that rival German luxury car brands, and a respectable range upwards of 245 miles. Exterior Styling Looks As Good As Ever Adam Gray | TopSpeed The Ioniq 5 looks nothing like a Hyundai. In fact, it looks nothing like any other EV on American roads. And yet, its exterior design is hardly polarizing. The marketing term used by Hyundai to describe the first-gen model was 'Sensuous Sportiness', but even minus the use of catchy phrases, the Ioniq 5 has managed to grab attention when standing still. An aerodynamic profile, sleek body lines, rugged XRT trim, silver cladding on Limited trim, and multiple body color options have been combined with an all-new LED headlight and taillight language for the 2026 model. The wheel design has been updated to add a sportier visual character. Sage Silver color option has been added, while Ultimate Red and Cosmic Blue Pearl, previously only on the XRT trim, have now been brought to all trims. Cabin Highlights Include Space And Design Hyundai The mainstay of the Ioniq 5's cabin has been the space on offer for all passengers. With a fully flat floorbed and a wheelbase of 118.1 inches, the EV is comfortable for tall passengers seated in any of the two rows. Add to it a boot space of up to 58.5 cubic feet with the seats down and a 0.85-cubic-foot frunk (front trunk), and there's a lot that can be packed inside as well. Being a Hyundai, it is feature-packed, of course, and comes with a panoramic sunroof, two 12.3-inch color displays, water-resistant interior fabric/H-Tex leatherette depending on the trim, a powered tailgate, a six-speaker sound system as standard, and an eight-speaker Bose sound system as optional, among other features. The 2026 model's cabin has been further enhanced with redesigned seats for more comfort as well as cooling and heating functionalities. Refinement And Performance Hyundai Multiple reviews of the Ioniq 5 have praised it for being a refined machine with extremely low NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) levels. The suspension setup further allows for a balanced ride character on all trims except the XRT, which has suspensions with more leeway and taller tire sidewalls. A low center of gravity also allows the Ioniq 5 to have a sporty character on the move. The standard-range trim puts out 168 horsepower, the longer-range battery and the rear-drive configuration offer 225 horsepower, while the AWD trim has 320 horsepower, allowing the Ioniq 5 to go from zero to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds. Quality Range, Especially At This Price TopSpeed | John Beltz Snyder There are two battery pack options available on the Ioniq 5. The standard-range trim comes with a 63.0-kWh battery, which has an EPA-certified range of 245 miles. Then there is the 84-kWh battery pack, which offers an EPA-certified range of 318 miles with the single-motor rear-wheel-drive powertrain and between 259 and 290 miles of range with dual-motor versions. The 2026 model also gets an even more advanced battery-management system and comes with claims of a lower charging time. Then there is a charging cable that works with level 1 and level 2 charging, which has been thrown in as part of the standard equipment list. Cool Character vs. Hot Rivalry Hyundai The crossover EV segment in the US is littered with options galore, and to be a standout player, each offering has to play an all-around game. While the Ioniq 5 has done well so far and walked away with the 2022 World Car of the Year, World Electric Vehicle of the Year, and World Car Design of the Year awards in the past, the rivalry remains absolutely intense.Hyundai The Ioniq 5 has been involved in a direct battle against the likes of Tesla Model Y, Kia EV6, and Ford Mach-E, while there's indirect competition from EVs like the Chevrolet Equinox EV and the newer Toyota bZ4X as well. The leader in this list is the Model Y, which has gone from being the best-selling EV to the best-selling vehicle across all segments and categories in the US. But is its dominance under some form of attack from the K-Pop star of EVs?Tesla Ioniq 5 has blunted Equinox's price advantage to a large extent, nearly matching the MSRP of all trims of the Chevy EV while offering a whole lot more. It has also managed to undercut the pricing structure of Model Y, EV6, and Mach-E with the current discounts that are in effect. So, while Model Y, Model 3, Equinox EV, and Mach-E outsold Ioniq 5 in all of 2025, as per Kelley Blue Book, the discounts on Ioniq 5 towards the end of the year have provided a surge, as is observed from Q1 2026 figures released by Hyundai. EV Price Comparisons *All prices sourced from official company websites Space And Comfort Tesla The Model Y has a massive advantage, despite the Ioniq 5's 3,000mm wheelbase, when it comes to cabin area and boot space. While the Korean model is very comfortable and does offer a fairly large luggage area, the Tesla's cabin is widely considered the most practical of all. Model Y, however, also has a cabin that is far more minimalist than what any of its rivals offer. EV Cabin Tech Is Among The Most Cutting-Edge On The Market Ford The Ioniq 5, EV6, and Mach-E each come with loads of in-cabin tech. The Koreans get a twin-screen layout with a couple of physical buttons as well, while Mach-e sports a portrait screen and an integrated volume dial. All of these mean that the learning curve is far less steep than inside the Model Y, which, although massively loaded with features too, is routing everything through the central screen. Drive Performance Is The Deciding Factor For Many Kia This is where individual preferences will matter, matter almost as much as exterior styling does. The ride and drive comfort offered by the Ioniq 5 is top-notch, while the Model Y is a sprinter. The EV6 has sharp handling dynamics, but the Mach-E is often considered the most well-balanced, with an eager and agile drive that is also fairly comfortable. In fact, the Mach-E's GT trim with performance upgrade offers a massive 700 pound-feet of torque.Ford The Model Y Long-Range RWD has an EPA-certified range of 387 miles, while the max range figures on the Ioniq 5 are 318 miles, EV6 is 319 miles, and Mach-E is 320 miles. The two Korean models also make use of 800-volt tech for a claimed 10 percent to 80 percent charge in 18 minutes. Tesla, in contrast, boasts of a massive Supercharge Network across the US, with nearly similar charge speeds.Source: Hyundai, Cox Automotive, Reuters, IEA
