This BMW is running some serious meats on its gigantic 23-inch wheels. The CarBuzz spies have just snapped another prototype of the BMW iX5, and it's not even the full M version. It's the model we're expecting to be badged M70, and it's so futuristic that it's wearing tires Michelin hasn't even announced yet. BMW Is Getting Serious About Its EVs CarBuzz/Valnet We've seen a number of Neue Klasse generation versions of the mid-sized BMW SUV testing already with different power sources. PHEVs, gas models, and, of course, the iX5 electric. This is the one that we believe will be called the iX5 M70. There are some serious signs of the M-ness of this vehicle, though, which could propel it to full iX5M status.Start with the gigantic brakes. The front calipers appear to have at least six pistons, if not more. They're also clamping down on some very large drilled brake rotors that manage to look small inside the wheels. They look small, because those wheels are 23 inches, larger than any X5 before it, and that includes the X5 M. The tires are equally large at 295/35ZR23 in the front and 315/35 in the rear. There's one other interesting bit about the tires we haven't seen before: they are brand new.CarBuzz/Valnet We can see the Michelin Pilot Sport S 6 lettering on the sidewall. Michelin only just launched the S 5 in 2023. Equally telling, it's a tire that Michelin expects you to use on the track. It's designed for it. The 6 will probably take the semi-slick design one-step further, making this a very serious SUV indeed. If it gets M70 branding, the iX5 will likely make at least 650 horsepower. That's how much the iX and i7 M70 models deliver, along with 811 pound-feet of torque. BMW tends to keep its numbers like that at around the same power point. This one will use a new generation of electric motors first seen with the iX3, though, so the number could grow. The gas X5 M60i makes just 523 hp, and the current X5M does 617. Cabin Isn't Quite The Same As iX3 CarBuzz/Valnet Thanks to some unfortunate glare, we only got a little glimpse into the cabin of the iX5. Still, we can see that it's going to have a lot in common with the iX3, just scaled up slightly. There are some differences, though, including the center screen. In the iX3 it's a parallelogram. In this model it seems to be a rectangle, with the sides vertical.Expect the latest version of BMW's Panoramic iDrive system in the new iX5. That will include BMW's improved voice assistant and will have a dash display that runs the width of the vehicle at the base of the front windshield. Most of the rest of the details are things we've seen before. Like the new taillights that get their own shape instead of copying the iX3 or the i3's. This vehicle has production lights front and rear, so we can see the slash-mark running lights in the front as well. There's still no confirmed reveal date for the new BMW SUV. We're expecting to see it later this year, and hopefully on sale before the end of 2026. BMW has already said it will have 40 new models by the end of next year, so it had better get rolling.BMW iX5 Spy Photo (22)
