The Apple Car is back, and we're not talking about the long-rumored EV project from the Silicon Valley giant, either. For the first time in 46 years, the iconic Apple Computer livery that ran during the 1980 IMSA season has returned to an official Porsche race car. The livery is appearing on both factory 963 GTP racers run by Porsche Penske Motorsport as part of IMSA's "throwback" race weekend at Laguna Seca.apple computers porsche 935The design, an early sponsorship for the now-goliath Apple, was used by D*** Barbour racing in the 1980 IMSA season and at the 1980 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driver Bob Garretson, who brought sponsorship from Apple thanks to founding Steves Wozniak and Jobs, was joined at Le Mans by Bathurst legend Allan Moffat and future Indianapolis 500 winner Bobby Rahal. The car retired after 14 hours with an engine issue.Unfortunately for fans of the livery, the actual historic racer has since been purchased by Adam Carolla and re-wrapped in the livery it wore to its more famous class win with Paul Newman at the 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans. The design has lived on in replicas and custom builds, however, like a popular 944 that made the rounds on the internet back in 2023. porsche penske motorsports apple 963 laguna seca 202646 years later, the livery is back in top-level American sports car racing on the sides of two different 963s. Porsche Penske Motorsport has already won two of the three IMSA races held this year, including overall wins at the 24 Hours of Daytona and the 12 Hours of Sebring. That makes the retro-themed Apple cars serious contenders to win what is likely to be the only race this livery runs any time soon.
