Buchanan — World Cup fans are in awe of America's retail cornucopia: Buc-ee's, Walmart, Costco, Waffle House, Cheesecake Factory.Wait until they get a load of the 777-horsepower, 6' 9" tall 2027 Ram 1500 TRX pickup with 35-inch all-terrain tires, 14-inch suspension travel and 36 inches of digital displays. TRX for T-Rex.On a rural road in Berrien County, I punched the dash button to initiate Launch Control. Floor the brake pedal. Floor the accelerator pedal. Wait for the tachometer to steady at 3500 RPM. Release the brake.AdvertisementAdvertisementRelease the Kraken.EERAWRRGGH! The beast exploded down the road, blowing through 60 mph in 3.5 seconds on the way to (speed withheld to preserve my license). Its four paws clawed at the pavement to put down the power of the shrieking, roaring 6.2-liter V-8 under the hood. The sound will send shivers up your spine. This is no normal V-8, but an eight-holer fed by a massive 2.4-liter supercharger that adds a high note to the engine's guttural roar. It's like King Kong going to battle against Skullcrawlers accompanied by the Michigan Philharmonic string section.EERAWRRGGH!But like Cheesecake Factory, TRX is more than just a sugary dessert. It is a remarkable menu of power, grace, luxury and technology. Ram calls it the brand's apex predator, but at $102K, it's the apex of luxurious capability in the U.S. market today with more power than a $123K, 670-horse Corvette Z06, the interior refinement of a $155K Mercedes G-wagon, and the hands-free tech of a $130K Cadillac Escalade.AdvertisementAdvertisementIf pickups are the automotive equivalent of a Swiss Army Knife, then TRX is a Swiss Army Saber: A supertruck that is the pinnacle of automotive capability. Let me count the ways.It can flyRedBud Raceway in Buchanan is the site of the American Motorcyclist Association's premier Pro Motocross Championship event. It's the Indy 500 of motocross, where the world's top bike racers fly over an epic 1.75-mile dirt course with jumps like the famed uphill 120-foot LaRocco's Leap. The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX is incredibly capable off-road with 14-inches of suspension travel from its Bilstein shocks. On a nearby RedBud off-road course for four-wheelers, I powered the Ram TRX into 90-degree left-hander, slewing dirt in a four-wheel drift, then nailed the throttle as the Ram straightened out — its horns pointed at a hilltop jump.I hit the jump at 65 mph and soared over 100 feet in the air.AdvertisementAdvertisementIt's a bird. It's a plane, It's Supertruck!WHUMP! The 6,350-pound rhino in tennis shoes returned to earth as gracefully as Cade Cunningham after a fast-break dunk. Try that in a supercar. Or a G-wagen. Or anything that doesn't ride on Ram's extraordinarily well-tuned Bilstein shocks that offer 14 inches of suspension travel. It's a sports carOf course, I still had to apply the brakes. No problem as the massive, six-pot 16-inch rotors brought T-rex back to earth in time to negotiate the next left-hander. On road, the Bilsteins were just as remarkable. Barreling along Buchanan's' rural roads on my way to RedBud, the navigation assistant gave me late notice on a righthander.AdvertisementAdvertisementI stood on the brakes so hard my right foot may have hit the back of the front bumper. The beast slowed in an instant, sucking the eyeballs out of my head. Corner negotiated. Back on the throttle. OMG TRX.Supercars love a twisty road as long as it's smooth. Good luck finding smooth asphalt in western Michigan. TRX didn't mind. With an assist from the massive 35s, the Bilsteins shrugged off the grooves, gutters and gouges, and TRX powered on.I selected SPORT mode and the head-up display reflected a race car-style horizontal RPM band off the windshield so I could snap off manual shifts at 6,500 RPM redline with the steering wheel-mounted paddles, without taking my eyes off the road. Just like a BMW M3. Or a Corvette Z06.Supercar, meet supertruck. It travels on autopilotFlying off off-road jumps and on-road twisties is fun, but hardly a sustainable road trip with passengers aboard (did I mention the TRX's palatial Crew Cab could fit 6'5" Cunningham and the rest of the Pistons' starting five?).AdvertisementAdvertisementOn the divided M-31 highway, I selected the Hands-Free Active Drive Assist button on the right-steering wheel spoke, put my hands on my knees, and let T-Rex drive.Look Ma, no hands. The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX can go hands-free on divided highways. When slower traffic loomed, I activated the left turn signal and T-Rex automatically moved to the left lane to pass. Toggle the right signal, and the pickup automatically moved back into the right lane. The beast won't navigate itself to a destination like my Tesla Model 3, but that'll come. It's a luxury yachtRelaxed in hands-free mode, I sipped on a water bottle on a beastly 95-degree summer day and looked around the posh cabin. Ram trucks are second to none in the luxury class. The crisp, multi-functional infotainment screen offers everything from drive mode customization to cooled, heated and massaging thrones.AdvertisementAdvertisementMr. Payne, would you like a waterfall, lower back, or extended massage? High, medium or low?Above me was a full, four-way-adjustable panoramic roof, including open-air, partial-open and full/partial shade features. Unlike its noisy off-road hellion cousin, the Jeep Wrangler with its removable top and doors, the pano-roof dovetails with the Ram's quiet luxury. The cabin is isolated from the world outside, even with those 35-inch all-terrains at all four corners. The posh interior of the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX rivals that made by any luxury automaker.Dual wireless charging pads are standard: one for me, one for Mrs. Payne (with clever grips so smartphones don't fly 'round the cabin when you're doing 100-foot jumps).Though I may need to carry a ladder in the bed to help my wee wife into a cabin that sits a foot off the ground.Swiss Army saberAh, yes, the bed. While offering the interior refinement of a Merc and the visceral V-8 athleticism of a 'Vette, the TRX give you the unique pickup dexterity of a bed. Useful for luggage (there is also cargo room under the rear-sea footwells), for picking up the annual Christmas tree, or for carrying your motocross bike for a race at RedBud.AdvertisementAdvertisementGot more than one bike? T-Rex will haul a 8,500-pound trailer. The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX comes standard with a 5'7" bed with auto close and a corner bed step. Its talents are endless. Along with its six-cylinder RHO sibling and Ford's Raptor/Raptor R twins, there is nothing like American full-size supertrucks in the world. Just ask a World Cup fan. You'll find them hanging out at a Buc-ee's when it's time to fill up the TRX's 33-gallon tank.Next week: 2026 Mercedes CLA EV2027 Ram 1500 TRXVehicle type: Four-wheel-drive, four-door, five-passenger pickupPrice: $102,790, including $2,795 destination chargePowerplant: 6.2-liter supercharged V-8Power: 777 horsepower, 680 pound-feet of torqueTransmission: Eight-speed automaticAdvertisementAdvertisementPerformance: 0-60 mph, 3.5 seconds (mfr.); maximum towing, 8,500 poundsWeight: 6,350 pounds (est.)Fuel economy: EPA mpg 10 city/14 highway/12 combinedReport cardHighs: All-around supertruck capability; drives itselfLows: May not fit in your garage; will drink Buc-ee's dryOverall: 4 starsHenry Payne is auto critic for The Detroit News.
