Look, I get it — most people want bigger vehicles, big and bigger. But I don’t really understand it, even if I know the logic well. I simply have a strong preference for smaller vehicles. (Stay tuned for more on that later….) There are many small EVs that I love, but the Hyundai IONIQ 5 now takes the cake. Hyundai just revealed images of the IONIQ 3 today. It was love at first sight. This is now my ideal car. It looks super cool and slick. It’s got a beautiful, classy interior. Well, I would prefer faux leather seats, but other than that it looks perfect. It’s got futuristic design elements, but it doesn’t go too far with that and they genuinely just look better. It’s got modern tech (screens) to the perfect degree for my tastes. Back to the exterior, it is basically perfection. Note that the IONIQ 3 N line was released earlier this year. It’s okay. It’s fine. But it’s really not my things. But this normal IONIQ 3 is a whole different matter. Unfortunately … I don’t expect we’ll ever see the IONIQ 3 in the USA. I’ll have to move back to Europe if I want to get one of these…. That’s my subjective take. For the rest of the article, I’ll share Hyundai’s take and more details on the car from its maker. How IONIQ 3 Combines Design and Technology for a More Intuitive EV Experience Hyundai IONIQ 3 blends Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ design with a warm cabin inspired by contemporary furniture design Compared to the sporty styling of the N Line, the IONIQ 3 in its other trim levels emphasises the model’s crisp, clean surfacing and refined character While N-Line features 19-inch wheels and a driver-focused cabin theme, the wider IONIQ 3 range is offered with 16- to 18-inch wheels and a variety of bright, airy interior colours As Hyundai’s first European model with Pleos Connect, IONIQ 3 introduces a smartphone-like user interface and extendable features for a more software-driven in-car experience From the start of the development, particular emphasis was put on European customer needs Hyundai Motor Europe presents IONIQ 3 as a new expression of electric mobility, combining confident exterior design, a warm and highly personalisable interior, and next-generation connected technology. Designed for people’s real everyday needs, the fully-electric compact hatchback brings the progressive character of the IONIQ brand to a broader range of customers. How does the exterior express the serene confidence of IONIQ 3? At the centre of IONIQ 3 is Hyundai’s ‘Art of Steel’ philosophy, a minimalistic, pure form language expressed through its distinctuve ‘Aero Hatch’ silhouette, which combines aerodynamic efficiency with boldness and elegance, while at the same time liberating generous interior space for a serene and comfortable environment for everyday driving. While the IONIQ 3 N Line adopts an assertive and muscular character, the rest of the IONIQ 3 range emphasises the stylish elegance of the Aero Hatch shape combined with a choice of inviting interior colour themes and intuitive usability. This exterior character is complemented by a wide choice of wheel designs from 16 to 18 inches, allowing customers to shape the car’s personality in subtle but distinctive ways. From efficiency-focused designs to more expressive visual treatments, each option supports the broader idea of a compact EV that feels considered from every angle and personalisable to individual tastes. How did Hyundai make the IONIQ 3 cabin feel more like a living space? Inside, IONIQ 3 continues this design clarity through a convenient and clearly structured interior. Its main volumes are softly sculpted, following the natural behaviour of the materials to enhance comfort and perceived quality. This creates clean surfaces that frame the cabin while allowing key functional elements, such as the air vents and central display, to stand out with clarity and precision. The cabin follows Hyundai’s ‘Furnished Space’ approach, arranging key elements more like furniture than conventional automotive components. Multiple interior colour combinations bring different moods to the cabin, from bright and open to more cocooning and refined. The effect is intentionally closer to a living space than a cockpit. Carefully selected textiles, soft tones and balanced colour pairings create a warm and tactile environment, giving the IONIQ 3 a distinct and welcoming character, in clear contrast to the more driver-oriented N Line. Why does PLEOS Connect mark a new step for Hyundai in Europe? IONIQ 3 is the first European Hyundai model to feature PLEOS Connect, Hyundai’s next-generation infotainment system, offering a modern smartphone-like user interface and extendable features through integrated apps. Designed to deliver a more intuitive and seamless in-vehicle experience, PLEOS Connect simplifies the way customers interact with information, entertainment and vehicle functions. It is based on Android Automotive OS, while Hyundai retains control over the overall user experience, system integration and brand environment. The system combines a large centre display, available as either a 12.9-inch or 14.6-inch screen depending on specification, with an available slim driver-focused display that keeps key information clearly within view, helping reduce distraction while maintaining a clean and intuitive layout. PLEOS Connect also introduces the PLEOS App Market, creating an open but governed ecosystem for third-party app developers and service providers. At start of sales, the system will offer access to around ten content apps, including music streaming, entertainment and productivity apps, with more than 30 expected by the end of the year. Another key feature is Gleo AI, Hyundai’s personalised AI voice assistant. Designed to support more natural, transactional voice conversations, Gleo AI enables a new level of vehicle-human interaction by allowing customers to access functions and services through more intuitive dialogue. Together, these elements make PLEOS Connect a central part of IONIQ 3’s proposition: advanced technology that feels simple, personal and relevant in everyday use. How does IONIQ 3 reflect Hyundai’s European focus? IONIQ 3 brings the progressive character of the IONIQ brand into a compact format developed, tested and produced with Europe in mind. European customers, driving patterns and infrastructure were key considerations throughout development. This is reflected in the compact dimensions, efficient packaging and generous interior space. With its range, the vehicle is well suited to everyday mobility in cities and suburbs, as well as longer journeys. Local development and testing helped fine-tune the suspension, steering and ride comfort for Europe’s diverse road conditions. From the start of development, European teams contributed to the design direction, product substance and driving character to address local customer use cases. Local production at Hyundai Motor Türkiye’s İzmit plant, part of Hyundai’s European manufacturing footprint, supports efficient logistics close to the model’s main market and reinforces Hyundai’s ability to respond to European customer expectations. Together, these elements show how Hyundai combines global capability with European expertise to create a more intuitive, personal and relevant EV experience for daily life.
