Online discourse surrounding Ferrari's Luce EV has been divisive to say the least. The brand's first EV is a big moment. Ferrari brought in famed Apple designer Jony Ive to design the car, working with an outside design house. It's something the brand hasn't exactly been rewarded for doing, with reactions to the automaker ranging from simple dislike for the design to comparisons to vehicles worth a fraction of the Luce's deep six-figure pricing.Nissan Ireland shared the above image on its social media channels after online chatter compared the Luce's shape to the Leaf, Nissan's $30,000 economy EV. The brand said it was "flattered" in its post, but the comparison is certainly a reach. Maybe at a good hundred feet the two might look similar, but in defense of Ive's design, there's a bit more going on with the Luce. At a minimum, the Pope has only driven one of the two vehicles, and it wasn't the Nissan.Unsurprisingly, Nissan welcomed the comparisons, saying in its post: "They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so thank you Ferrari. Nissan. Always a smart choice." At a minimum, the Luce's looks aren't what most people expect from a Ferrari.FerrariReally, the greatest travesty here is that Ive's excellent interior design work on the Luce will go unnoticed. The Luce's interior is a unique, visually interesting departure not just from what is being done at Ferrari, but in the industry as a whole. Ive makes it feel part Testarossa, part airplane cockpit with tos of switches and dials. There's even a pull switch located above the center console that is used ot activate the Luce's launch mode. With 1,000+ horsepower and a sub-three-second zero to sixty time, the Luce's design is probably its weakest point. We'll have to wait and see if Ferrari decides to offer a rebuttal. This story was originally published by Men's Journal on May 30, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
