Over a two-hour launch event, NIO founder William Li delivered a dense stream of technical disclosures, outlining what the company describes as its most technologically advanced SUV to date. Pricing remains the key highlight. The new model is offered in three variants, with pre-sale pricing as follows: Executive Luxury Edition: RMB 528,000 ($77,190) with battery / RMB 420,000 ($61,470) under BaaS; Executive Signature Edition: RMB 588,000 ($85,950) with battery / RMB 480,000 ($70,260) under BaaS; Horizon Special Edition: RMB 658,000 ($96,330) with battery / RMB 550,000 ($80,500) under BaaS. NIO ES9 pricing This time, the ES9 standardizes features such as steer-by-wire, rear-wheel steering, and the Lyra 9.2.4.8 audio system across all variants. The Executive Signature Edition adds SkyRide fully active suspension, an additional NX9031 chip, and upgraded intelligent privacy dimming windows. The top-tier Horizon Special Edition further includes diamond tweeters, exclusive design elements and color schemes, as well as bespoke embroidery themes. Under the battery leasing (BaaS) model, the ES9 effectively undercuts competitors such as Zeekr 9X and AITO M9 in entry pricing. With its unique energy replenishment model, strong luxury positioning, and flagship-level specifications, NIO has made a decisive push into the large SUV segment in 2026. The model is described as the culmination of “11 years of innovation.” Beyond performance metrics, Li also introduced elements of traditional Chinese culture into the narrative, adding a distinctive layer to the presentation. The ES9 packs a substantial amount of information—here’s a closer look. Redefining Chinese flagship luxury Positioned as the culmination of NIO’s 11 years of innovation, the ES9 is also claimed to be China’s largest pure electric SUV. It measures 5365/2029/1870 mm with a 3250 mm wheelbase. Combined with a 1.28 m shoulder line and 2.68 m chrome trim, the vehicle sets a new benchmark for size within NIO’s SUV lineup. NIO ES9 launch event For reference, the Li Auto MEGA measures 5350/1965/1850 mm. As an SUV, the ES9 exceeds even a large MPV in overall dimensions. The increased size translates directly into interior space: longitudinal cabin space reaches 2805 mm; second-row legroom extends to 1520 mm; third-row headroom is 1002 mm; second-row headroom is 1096 mm—all claimed to be class-leading. In terms of storage, while the ONVO L90 was described as accommodating “six passengers and 10 suitcases,” the ES9 raises that to “six passengers and 13 suitcases.” NIO ES9 launch event Every dimension related to space is clearly engineered toward best-in-class performance, making it one of the few SUVs to rival mainstream MPVs in practicality. To enhance its visual presence, NIO equips the ES9 with crystal lighting elements, high-definition projection headlights, and dark-gold exterior trim. NIO ES9 launch event However, appealing to affluent buyers requires more than just visual impact—it also demands emotional resonance. Visually, the Horizon Special Edition incorporates “landscape embroidery” across 12 interior locations, reflecting traditional Chinese cultural motifs. The cabin also features over 1 m² of natural “Maple Shadow” wood trim, with each unit showcasing unique grain patterns. Additionally, the “Sky Island” central axis design from the ET9 is integrated into the ES9’s interior, spanning 1.5 m² to create a sense of spatial separation. NIO ES9 launch event The core focus lies on the second-row “zero-gravity executive seats,” extending up to 2.3 meters when fully deployed, with class-leading dimensions across backrest, armrest, and cushion. Each seat includes a foldable 1-meter executive table, along with 20-point foot massage and 22-point full-body massage functions. NIO ES9 launch event To align with traditional user preferences, the cabin features 137 physical buttons. An executive center console further enhances the rear cabin’s functionality, complemented by an optional magnetic tea table. NIO ES9 launch event Compared with the third-generation ES8, the ES9 incorporates more elements inspired by traditional Chinese aesthetics, blending cultural symbolism with advanced automotive technology. According to NIO co-founder Qin Lihong, the design philosophy aims for “luxurious but not excessive, prestigious but not ostentatious.” NIO co-founder Qin Lihong describe the ES9 on social media This balance between technology and tradition defines the ES9’s identity as a flagship. Executive-level intelligence How does the ES9 deliver on intelligence and technology? Luxury expectations among high-net-worth users now extend beyond comfort to advanced digital and intelligent experiences. Accordingly, NIO equips the second row with dual 3.3K AMOLED displays, each offering 889 nits brightness, Dolby Vision support, and 8 MP cameras. NIO ES9 launch event Beyond entertainment, the ES9 integrates enterprise functionality through a native Feishu app, enabling in-car video conferencing. The vehicle features a 47-speaker audio system using premium materials such as carbon fiber, Kevlar, aluminum, and diamond, delivering 3020W output in a 9.2.4.8 configuration—branded as Lyra. NIO ES9 launch event Privacy is another key pillar. The ES9 introduces array-based LC smart dimming windows, with 11 adjustable zones per window, capable of fully blocking external light. A dedicated privacy button enables system-wide camera shutdown, sound isolation, and light blocking, creating a secure in-cabin environment. On the technology front, the ES9 integrates the NX9031 chip (dual chips on higher trims), three LiDAR units, 4D imaging radar, and a total of 31 sensors, enabling 350° perception coverage. It runs NIO’s World Model (NWM) with closed-loop reinforcement learning, supporting advanced functions such as model-based AES and AEB, point-to-point navigation assistance, and intelligent parking. NIO ES9 launch event Chassis hardware includes standard rear-wheel steering and steer-by-wire, while higher trims feature SkyRide fully active suspension with up to 60 mm vertical travel. These systems also enable an intelligent all-terrain mode, adapting to conditions such as water crossings, desert terrain, and icy roads. NIO ES9 launch event Powertrain-wise, the ES9 is built on a 900V architecture, featuring a 520 kW dual-motor AWD system, a 102 kWh battery pack, 620 km CLTC range, and 17.4 kWh/100 km energy consumption. While not all technical details can be covered, it is clear that NIO has taken an “all-in” approach with its flagship SUV. At RMB 528,000 ($77,190), the pricing remains competitive given the extensive feature set. How well will the ES9 sell? Large luxury SUVs remain a challenging segment for pure EVs. High-end buyers prioritize space, comfort, craftsmanship, and convenience in energy replenishment. Most pure EV SUVs rely solely on charging, which is less convenient for long-distance travel compared to refueling. Additionally, large EVs require bigger battery packs, increasing cost pressures. Hybrid solutions, as seen in Li Auto L9 and AITO M9, address these concerns and have driven strong demand in the “9-series” SUV segment. NIO ES9 Other competitors such as Zeekr 9X, IM LS9, and Voyah Taishan also predominantly adopt extended-range or hybrid approaches. Data suggests that even for AITO M9, the pure electric version accounted for less than 10% of sales in November 2025. However, the third-generation NIO ES8 has proven to be an exception. Since its launch on September 20 last year, it has achieved 90,000 deliveries in under 200 days, becoming a core volume driver for the NIO brand. NIO ES9 interior view The ES9 continues this pure electric strategy, competing directly with established players like Zeekr 9X and AITO M9. The ES8 has already demonstrated that large pure electric SUVs can succeed, supported by NIO’s network of over 3,700 battery swap stations, premium positioning, and competitive pricing. The ES9 builds on this foundation as a true flagship representing NIO’s highest technological capabilities. The remaining question is: how high can its monthly sales go?
