New Mitsubishi Pajero Will Be Revealed This FallMitsubishi (Mitsubishi)Mitsubishi confirmed that it will revive the Pajero nameplate on a new "cross-country SUV" that will be revealed this fall. The Pajero will share its platform with the Triton pickup truck, casting doubt over whether the SUV will be sold to the U.S. market.Still, Mitsubishi trademarked Montero—the name used for the Pajero in the U.S. in the past—in 2024, so we're holding out hope. There's a new full-size off-road-ready SUV coming from Mitsubishi, and it wears a classic nameplate. We first saw spy photos of a large new Mitsubishi SUV in July 2025, before the company released a teaser video in January. Now Mitsubishi has announced that the SUV will be revealed this fall, and the Pajero name, first used in 1982, will make a return.KGP Photography - Car and Driver (KGP Photography - Car and Driver)The Pajero was discontinued in 2021 after being on sale for nearly 40 years across four generations. Known as the Montero in the U.S. market, the full-size all-terrain SUV was last sold in 2006. While Mitsubishi has not confirmed that the new Pajero will spawn a Montero in the U.S., Mitsubishi refers to it as a global vehicle, and it would seem like a no-brainer to bring it stateside considering Americans' healthy appetite for rugged-looking SUVs.AdvertisementAdvertisementThere aren't many details yet about the new Pajero, but Mitsubishi refers to it as a "cross-country SUV," hinting at its off-road chops. Mitsubishi also says that it rides on the ladder frame also found beneath the Triton pickup truck, which could be a barrier to entry in the U.S., given that the Triton isn't sold here and the platform may not be homologated and thus certified for sale here.2001 Mitsubishi Montero.Ron Perry - Car and Driver (Ron Perry - Car and Driver)Despite sharing its bones with the Triton, Mitsubishi says the cabin and suspension are unique designs developed for the Pajero. The Pajero will also have different front-end styling, as seen in the teaser. The shadowy image shows a bold lighting setup with two vertical elements containing a series of horizontal lines, which then connect to horizontal elements that nearly stretch across the front fascia, broken up only by the Mitsubishi badge.Originally, we had theorized that the Montero may share a platform with Nissan's upcoming body-on-frame Xterra, which will also underpin a new Frontier pickup truck, given Mitsubishi and Nissan's close ties. But the announcement that the Pajero will be based on the Triton changes things, at least as far as the U.S. market is concerned. Still, Mitsubishi did trademark the name Montero in the United States in 2024, so there's still a chance Mitsubishi plans to bring the SUV here, but we'll just have to wait and see.➡️ Skip the lot.
