The CarBuzz spies have snapped Mercedes-Benz's new smaller G-Class SUV testing a few times already, but we've never seen it like this. Instead of trying to fool us about the vehicle we're looking at, Mercedes-Benz is now embracing its inner G with this wrap. Or should we say its inner g... lower-case on purpose. Let's Sing A Song About G CarBuzz/Valnet Benz's new camouflage wrap is thinning, revealing more of the little off-roader than we've seen before. However, that's not the big hint we're talking about. Look closely at the new wrap and you'll see it's covered with lower-case letter g's in acid green and light grey, and that has us wondering. Is Mercedes telling us the name of its forthcoming SUV?We knew that Mercedes-Benz would never call it the Baby G; a rugged model with that name would be a tough sell. Calling it a g-Class with a lower-case g is, admittedly, kind of brilliant from a marketing perspective since it appears to be just that... a smaller G. But having a G-Class and a g-class on the showroom floor would be confusing. It might be good for buyers of the cheaper new model, who could still say they drove a g. But G customers may feel slighted by that, especially if there's a big price difference between them.CarBuzz/Valnet The wrap also shows what might be Benz's biggest problem with this little SUV, and it's not what to call it. The smaller G-Class continues to look far too cute. We're not saying there's anything wrong with cute vehicles; we love the Beetle, Mazda Miata, and the Suzuki X90. But they aren't exactly what Benz has been offering with the G-Class in its long history.Unwrapping it, which will probably happen early next year, will reveal the details that might make it look stronger than the 1980s or stronger than diamonds like the original. We're not convinced, though, as the tall greenhouse with a short-looking body, big headlights, and gigantic fender flares all scream cute at a high volume. Even the rear tire cover, which blocks almost the entire back of the SUV, looks adorable. Like it is wearing its linebacker dad's tie. It's A Gas-Gas-Gas, Probably CarBuzz/Valnet The new smaller G-Class model was originally intended to be purely electric. Big shifts in the EV marketplace, or at least big perceived shifts, have Mercedes-Benz scrambling to give it gas power, though we're not yet sure if that will be in addition to or instead of electric. Our spies say that the new model will most likely get the 1.5-liter four-cylinder turbocharged engine from the latest CLA sedan. That model is expected to make up to 190 horsepower in CLA 220 form, with an extra 30 hp from an electric motor in the eight-speed automatic. In late 2025, Mercedes-Benz confirmed that this SUV would get its own chassis, and that it would be a proper ladder frame just like the big one. "The G is a very special, authentic car, and the Mini G has to be authentic," chief technology officer, Markus Schäfer said.We hope that authenticity includes a proper 4x4 transfer case and locking differentials like the real thing, but also wouldn't be surprised if it came with a more traditional AWD system. Portal axles might be completely out of the question, but we can dream, can't we?We also thought about the possibility that these were number 9 badges, because the g shape looks a lot like a 9. But numbers are BMWs thing, while Mercedes does letters. We don't think that Benz would step on its rival's toes like that.MB Baby g 8
