Mercedes-Benz and AMG are about to do something. AMG Motorsport has just posted a string of images to its Instagram account that look more like a campaign for a found-footage horror movie than they do for a car. The blurry images show as little as possible, but also make three things clear: March 23, 2026, the Nürburgring's Nordschleife, and "origin: record." AMG Is Concealing Something Very Fast Mercedes-Benz The car looks to be a very camouflaged performance coupe. There are a few things that it could be, and there are even signs that this is more than one model.First on the list is a disguised version of the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door, the upcoming electric supercar from the German automaker that is based on the AMG Concept GT XX. The track is one of the most famous in the world, where the fastest automakers attempt to snatch the fastest times away from their competitors. As for record, well, that speaks for itself.Mercedes-Benz A second possibility, and the one we think is more likely, is that this is actually a new gas AMG GT. Last year, the company showed a few photos of a new model called the Concept AMG GT Track Sport and said that "the GT family is not yet complete." It also said that this car would set "new standards and record times." It could be the new GT Black Series that AMG has already spoken about. It could, of course, also be both, because there are clearly two different vehicles shown in these images.Mercedes-AMG's GT 4-Door has already spent plenty of time on the Nürburgring. The CarBuzz spies have captured it doing development testing on that track over the last year, with runs in the sun and the rain and the fog. This will be AMG's flagship, so electric or gas, it needs to be able to deliver on the track. How Many Records Does AMG Want? Mercedes-Benz Mercedes-AMG has already shown us that it wants to set records with its supercars, no matter the power source. It took the Concept GT XX to the Nardo Ring in Italy last year, where two cars drove for eight days straight, stopping only for tires and charging. It set multiple records, including 3,405 miles in 24 hours (beating the old record by 1,000) and driving 24,901 miles in its full run.The performance company already holds the absolute record for production cars at the track, and that was set in a hybrid. In 2024, Mercedes-AMG set a record with the AMG One. The car, with an F1-derived 1.6-liter V6 and a hybrid motor that boosted total output to 1,049 hp, managed a 6:29 lap. Mercedes-AMGIt makes sense, then, that Mercedes-AMG would want a fast lap on the Nürburgring with its newer cars. But it also makes sense that it would want to use the production car, or at least a prototype, rather than a concept. A real car doing the deed deserves a lot more attention, and, crucially, gives the sales staff something to brag about. The current record for an electric production sedan (the 4-Door does, after all, have four doors) was set by Xiaomi last year. Its SU7 Ultra sedan with Track Package managed to lap the circuit in 7:04. Before that, it was a Porsche Taycan Turbo GT at 7:07. On the Super Sports Car list, the top spot belongs to the Yangwang U9 Xtreme with a 6:59.For gas sports cars, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Manthey has a five-second lead. It took away the record with a 6:43 lap in 2021, snatching glory from the last AMG GT Black Series. Blood, therefore, has been spilled. When will AMG make its record attempt? That could be what the date is referring to, but we're not sure. Normally, an automaker wouldn't say it was going to try if it didn't have the record in the bag. It's possible that this is the test day, but it's also possible Mercedes-AMG plans to make the announcement later today. Though it is getting a bit late for that.Stay tuned, as they say. We're expecting more from Mercedes-AMG about whether a go-fast announcement is imminent.
