This is the quickest version of the best body style Mercedes-Benz offers. It's also going to be the most controversial, at least for the group of enthusiasts that calls itself purists. The CarBuzz spy photographers have just captured the Mercedes-AMG CLA Shooting Brake doing laps of the Nürburgring. The wagon comes complete with more than 500 horsepower and V8 sounds, but it doesn't have eight cylinders. In fact, it doesn't have any cylinders. But there is a great big ol' battery underneath. AMG's Hot Electric Wagon CarBuzz/Valnet Yes, this is the Mercedes-AMG CLA Shooting Brake EQ. It's the electric version of the CLA that has been stretched into a wagon and then given the AMG treatment. We hear your concerns, but we raise you the reports from our spies that this EV will have 544 hp. That's not exactly weaksauce. There are other signs that this is the AMG version of the new CLA. The active rear spoiler that's extended at the top of the hatch is one sure sign. The absolutely gigantic brakes crammed into the AMG-design wheels are another.CarBuzz/Valnet Covering the car in camouflage over just the nose, rear, and the side skirts confirms it. Those are all the body parts we expect AMG to replace stock Benz parts with more aggressive designs of its own. Ordinarily, we could also focus in on the exhaust tips to spot an AMG. But in this case... yeah.Look closely, and you can see twisting designs of the side skirts. It's a sharp difference from the straight and level skirts on the standard CLA wagon. We've seen that one already, when Mercedes-Benz revealed the CLA 250 Shooting Brake last July. It's tough to spot the changes up front thanks to all of that swirly vinyl. There will be changes, though, with signs of new side inlet air ducts and a larger lower grille. The main grille will be solid, but it should get the AMG Panamericana vertical bar motif that we've seen on other AMG EVs. The rear wing is new, and the rear bumper also appears to be a different one than the standard car's. Expect Serious Electric Power With Phony V8 Noises CarBuzz/Valnet What about the V8 sounds? The CarBuzz spies tell us that this will use three AMG axial flux motors, sourced from Benz subsidiary Yasa. These extreme motors put out more than 1,300 hp in the Concept GT XX electric, but they don't make much noise. So, we're told, the car will get V8 sound simulation in a special V8 mode. The head of AMG has previously said that the company is looking at fake noises and shifts, and we've seen teasers that show the sound.Other benefits of the new CLA's electric platform include fast charging and big range figures. The 800-volt system should fast charge at up to 320 kW, adding around 200 miles of range in about 10 minutes on the right fast charger. Will the US see the Mercedes-AMG CLA EQ? Probably, but not this one. Mercedes-Benz has built three generations of the CLA, and counting this one, all three have received the Shooting Brake version. The first two didn't make it here, and so the third one isn't likely either. Especially not with US EV sales as they are. This is one of the best-looking vehicles Mercedes-Benz builds, even if it's not the biggest or the fastest or even close to being the most expensive. We'd love to see it in more markets, and we expect to learn more about the car soon. Expect a full reveal later this year as Benz continues its biggest new model cycle ever.MB AMG CLA Shooting Brake 13
