Most hypercars borrow a little Formula 1 marketing. The Mercedes-AMG One borrows the engine. On Sunday, September 27, a red one with a black bonnet and Swiss plates from the canton of Bern turned up on a Geneva street, and someone filmed it for Instagram. The reel comes from the spotting account davspotter, captioned "Road legal-F1 car spotted tonight in Geneva" and tagged #Mercedes, #AMG, #Geneva and #Petronas. It is a single shot. The One sits in the road in front of an ornate stone building with a wrought-iron entrance canopy, a black Mercedes SUV behind it and pedestrians passing on the pavement. The post does not name the owner, give an address, or say whether the color is paint or a wrap. The plate is the only registration detail on view, and its BE prefix places the car on Bern's register, not Geneva's, where plates begin with GE. We have left the number itself out. What the car is wearingBeyond the red body, this One has a black roof and bonnet, black wheels, red mirror caps and a graphic pattern that fades across the rear fender behind the door. Nothing on it matches the #Petronas tag. Petronas is title partner of the Mercedes Formula 1 team, and there is no teal anywhere on this car.A 2023 Mercedes-AMG One in black and turquoise, the closest a production One gets to the F1 team's colors (representative image, not the Geneva car). Mercedes' own documents suggest it may not have been. What Mercedes put in writingThe launch release Mercedes issued on June 1, 2022, lists a 1,599 cc turbocharged V6 derived from the team's F1 power unit, making 422 kW (574 hp) at 9,000 rpm and revving to 11,000. An MGU-K on the crankshaft adds 120 kW, an MGU-H on the turbocharger 90 kW, and two 120 kW motors drive the front axle. Mercedes quotes 782 kW (1,063 hp) combined, 0 to 200 km/h in 7.0 seconds and a 352 km/h top speed. The race-spec versions of that hardware are rationed by the FIA, which is how Kimi Antonelli ended up short of engine parts in August. The "road legal" half of the caption is where the release gets specific. To pass Euro 6, Mercedes fitted four preheated metal catalytic converters, two ceramic catalysts and two petrol particulate filters. The default Race Safe program starts the car on electric power, and Mercedes says the combustion engine only switches on when more power is requested. The 8.4 kWh battery is rated for 18.1 km of electric range, enough for a crawl through central Geneva and about 2.7 km short of a lap of the 20.8 km Nordschleife. That lap is the car's other claim to the F1 connection. Maro Engel set 6:35.183 at the Nürburgring on October 28, 2022, and the team later reported 6:29.090, calling the One the first production car under 6:30.The launch release lists neither a price nor a build total. Nor does the reel settle how often this red car is driven; sightings like this one, and the Revuelto SV that turned up on Colorado plates this month, tend to be the only public record of where these cars live. For now, a Bern registration on a Geneva street is all this one has given away.Should an AMG One, sold on its Formula 1 engine, wear the team's silver and teal, or is this red-and-black spec the better call?Sources: davspotter Instagram reel, September 27, 2026; Mercedes-Benz launch release "The new Mercedes-AMG ONE: Formula 1 technology for the road," June 1, 2022; Mercedes-Benz Nürburgring record statement, October 2022; Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team lap-record announcement.⚡ Read the full article on Backfire News
