Kia may have been known years ago for its small cars, but it now has big ambitions for the next five years with global plans to launch nine new internal-combustion-engine models, expand its EV lineup to 14 models, sell one million battery-electric vehicles annually, grow its hybrid portfolio to 13 models, and sell 1.1 million hybrids, all by 2030.Kia management revealed the wide-ranging growth strategy early today during CEO Investor Day in Seoul, Korea, and the new sheet metal is intended to boost global sales from 3.13 million vehicles in 2025 to 3.35 million this year and 4.13 million by 2030. If all goes as planned, Kia says it can achieve 4.5% global market share, up from about 4% today. Finding the gaps where Kia will add the new models is a challenge, and it's likely that not all of them will come to the US.Ho Sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Corporation, said the automaker will build on its achievements from the past five years in sustainability, EVs, and the modular, purpose-built Platform Beyond Vehicle (PBV) electric vans as part of a mobility ecosystem into the future."EVs, HEVs, autonomous driving, and robotics will serve as key drivers for Kia’s fastest growth to date. Even amid the evolving global environment, Kia will proactively respond to changing market conditions through differentiated strategies.”- Kia CEO Ho Sung Song What Comes After Tasman? KiaA version of the Tasman body-on-frame pickup platform is on the way to the US, with hybrid and extended-range EV variants promised by 2030. And when Kia talks about a "full SUV lineup," that could very well include a serious off-roader now that a body-on-frame truck has been confirmed for the US.In this region, Kia currently offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid versions of the Niro, Sportage, and Sorento crossovers, as well as a hybrid Carnival minivan. While popular, none have truly punchy off-road dress-up kits like we see from Honda and Subaru. And none have the bones to rival vehicles like the Bronco or Wrangler.Kia The US portfolio is reasonably fresh right now, with an all-new second-generation Seltos arriving for 2027 with hybrid options, a refreshed Sportage for 2026, the addition of the K4 hatchback for 2026, and an all-new 2027 Telluride three-row SUV on the way. And the battery-electric EV6 and larger EV9 SUV are popular and well regarded, soon to be joined later this year by the smaller EV3.The Kia Soul has departed, so there's an opportunity to replace that whimsical compact hatchback below the K4 in the lineup. The Niro remains but only in hybrid form as the EV and PHEV versions are being discontinued. The launch of a fifth-generation Sorento has been postponed to 2027 or 2028, partly because the current model is selling well. US Sales Goal: 1.02 MIllion Units Kia Specific to EVs, Kia plans to have 14 of them by 2030, including two passenger vehicles, nine SUVs and 3 PBVs, and a next‑generation EV platform is in development. One of those new EVs is one we likely will not get in the US, the EV2, which is arriving in Europe this year.In the US, Kia's ambitions are to sell 1.02 million vehicles and achieve 6.2% market share by 2030, up from 852,155 vehicles sold in 2025, with 5.2% market share. Part of that regional growth strategy means doubling the number of hybrid models offered in the US, from four to eight. Elsewhere, Kia is shooting for 746,000 deliveries in Europe and 1.48 million units in emerging markets by 2030.Commercial vehicles also figure prominently, with plans to sell 232,000 PBVs by 2030. That will be driven by a full lineup of PV5, PV7, and PV9 models, but it's not clear how many PBVs are intended for the US.When Hyundai Motor Group acquired a controlling stake in Kia in 1998, the deal set in motion a fierce internal rivalry between the Hyundai brand and Kia, which for years had been considered a little brother to a larger brand flying the corporate namesake. But Kia has been stepping out of Hyundai's shadow for years and appears poised to continue doing so by emphasizing autonomous driving, robotics, and software-defined vehicles.
