2026 Kia K4 Hatchback Review: The Style PlayForbesGreg Migliore, ContributorUpdatedThu, September 10, 2026 at 7:07 PM UTCAdd us on Google2026 Kia K4 HatchbackKiaThe 2026 Kia K4 Hatchback is a stylish reminder that some people still want to drive actual cars and illustrates there's a niche left for station wagons.I spent a week test driving the Kia K4 Hatch and came away impressed with its looks, driving character and functionality. I tested the K4 Hatch EX, the entry-level model that stickered for $26,275, including destination charges and optional carpeted floor mats ($190).2026 Kia K4 Hatchback: A Car, and a Strategy2026 Kia K4 HatchbackKia is hawking the hatch as its own model to complement the K4 sedan. The hatch joined the lineup last year and immediately garnered attention for its eye-catching design and the fact it has relatively few competitors. From the back and the side, it looks like a sleek station wagon with clean lines, fang-shaped taillights and curvy fenders. It's reminiscent of Jaguar and Volvo station wagons that had a moment in the 2010s. In fact, both of those brands—and the Detroit Three—should look at the K4 Hatch as a way to flex their design muscles and recapture some car buyers.AdvertisementAdvertisementIn profile, it has a wagon vibe, but functionally it is indeed a hatch (like the Pontiac Vibe). The Kia 4 Hatchback competes against the Honda Civic and Mazda 3 hatches, with the Japanese entries usually earning more enthusiast credibility based on their long lineages.Still, the K4 Hatch is arguably the best looking in the class, and one of the more distinctive models on the road. Kia takes risks with its design and that pays off with styling that makes even lower-cost models, like this one, look far more expensive.2026 Kia K4: Road Test2026 Kia K4 HatchbackI was excited to get behind the wheel, but really, the design is what carries the K4 Hatchback. It doesn't drive as sporty as it looks.Like the K4 sedan (which shares the same engines) the K4 Hatch is a little dull and coarse to drive. The steering is light and doesn't offer much feedback, even in Sport mode. The hatch is low to the ground, but the suspension doesn't do much to keep the car buttoned-down in corners, and it jostles over bumpy roads. Mazda has the best chassis in this segment, followed by Honda.AdvertisementAdvertisementThat's OK for Kia. This is still a compact hatch that costs well below $30 grand. No one is expecting something tuned at Laguna Seca. The low ride height isn't ideal when seemingly everyone in Michigan drives a truck or huge SUV, but when the traffic is open, I felt connected and confident on the road. And it's a lot of fun.Even with the slower reflexes, I felt confident pushing the K4 Hatchback through turns and during passing. The stance also enhances the car's design. Look no further than the Kia EV6, which is an attractive wagon-like hatch, but with its taller ride height, the EV6 veers more into crossover territory. That's probably necessary for an electric car trying to gain as many buyers as possible, but props to Kia for laying low with the K4.The 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine makes 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque, which will get you to 62 miles per hour in a leisurely 9.8 seconds. Paired with a continuously variable transmission, the powertrain is the only thing that feels appliance-like about this Kia.The interior is basic, but the infotainment system is simple enough to use. There's switches on the steering wheel and some knobs and buttons, which work with the touchscreen to make for an easy-going user experience.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe K4 Hatch has 22.2 cubic feet of cargo space, considerably more room than the K4 sedan's 14.6 cubes. For many people, this will be necessary, and I found the K4 Hatchback had way more functionality than I expected from something based on a compact car. I fit a large grocery order back there, sporting equipment and two sets of golf clubs during my week with the K4. My only complaint, some of my hybrid clubs and my driver (a long Cobra stick), were a little squeezed; and I'm always nervous about losing yards off the tee.My Verdict on the 2026 Kia K4 HatchbackThe K4 Hatch is a bit of a sleeper entry. Kia set a sales record in August, and the K4—helped by the Hatchback—had its best month ever. Kia still struggles a little bit with brand perception, but there's also a fair amount of people who see vehicles like the K4 Hatchback, the Telluride and the Sportage, and say: What's That? They've already made up their mind that they're interested, and then the Kia name becomes irrelevant, neutral or even positive. A stylish Kia probably gets more consideration than a domestic in many parts of the country. Then factor in value: Kia will give you seat heaters, satellite radio and fake leather seats for a price well below many of its competitors, and its vehicles usually are better looking and have great warranties. Those are reasons enough to consider the 2026 Kia K4 Hatch. It's a vehicle a lot of people could use in their daily life, and look good doing so. You might be a little bored with its driving character, but the price, design and features balance that out. This article was originally published on Forbes.com
