Tesla EVs are holding their value while non-Tesla EVs drop 10 percent YoY.Now’s the time to buy a used Chevrolet Bolt or Ford Mustang Mach-E.Any way you slice it, the market looks great for used EV buyers. If you were ever thinking about purchasing a used electric car, now’s the time. All used car prices are down, with gas-powered cars dropping by 2.8 percent in the first quarter of the year compared to the same time last year. Tesla EVs held steady for that time period, losing only 0.1 percent of their value. The value of all used EVs dropped 3.0 percent and hybrids dropped only 1.4. But non-Tesla EVs lost 10.3 percent of their value from Q1 2025 to Q 1 2026, according to a study by iSeeCars.com. The results seem counterintuitive, at least.“Many people assumed the recent spike in gas prices would mean a resurgence in EV demand, but hybrids have proven to be the real benefactor of rising fuel costs,” said iSeeCars Executive Analyst Karl Brauer. “Hybrids are selling faster, retaining more value, and growing their market share faster than electric vehicles.” While all used vehicles are selling slower compared to a year ago, non-Tesla EVs are the slowest, staying on dealer lots for an average of 60.1 days. Teslas are the fastest-sellers, remaining on the lot for an average of just 32.4 days, according to the study.2022 Kia EV6Among used cars of all powertrains, Teslas still occupied three of the top 10 spots on the list, with the outgoing Tesla Model X being sold in just 25.6 days, a figure 0.4 times the average length of time on the block. The average used car stays parked on the lot for 58.8 days, the study says.A used EV makes good economic sense, too.Electric vehicles (EVs) are generall $1500 to $3000 cheaper to operate annually than gas cars, driven by roughly 60–75% lower fuel costs and 30–50% lower maintenance expenses, according to the NRDC. While EVs often have higher purchase prices, drivers save significantly on gas-to-electricity conversion and reduced service needs (no oil changes), usually breaking even over several years.
