Ian Callum Aims to Reimagine the Jaguar XJ220Callum DesignsLet it never be said that Ian Callum doesn't dream big. His design consultancy, Callum Designs, has just unveiled its first glimpse of an idea for a reimagined Jaguar XJ220—and it's far more than a simple restomod. The project, described as both a concept and a design study, takes the iconic supercar's unmistakable silhouette and pushes it in a much more modern and aggressive direction.Only side profile and rear three-quarter images have been released so far, but they reveal significant changes. The new design features sharper surfacing around the rear haunches, a more pronounced taper toward the tail, and a cleaner overall form.Callum DesignsBut despite the dramatic updates, several hallmark XJ220 elements remain intact. The distinctive egg-shaped side windows survive, as do the signature air ducts carved into the flanks. At the rear, the horizontal grille lines of the original now turn into LED light strips and the formerly fixed wing now appears to be a two-piece unit with a split in the middle.AdvertisementAdvertisementCallum Design is careful to describe the project as an exploration, rather than a production proposal; there are currently no announced plans to build a road-going version. At the same time, the company hints that the study demonstrates what could be achieved for a sufficiently motivated client with a healthy budget. In other words, while you shouldn't expect a showroom launch, a one-off commission might not be out of the question. This is, after all, the same company that made a couple of road-legal C-X75s when Jaguar wouldn't.As Autocar, which first highlighted the car, pointed out, the timing is notable; October marks 35 years since the production XJ220 made its debut at the Tokyo Motor Show, making this year an ideal moment to revisit one of Britain's most celebrated supercars. In case you needed a reminder what the original XJ220 looks like.JaguarCallum's consultancy has built a reputation for breathing new life into automotive icons. Recent projects include a modernized Wood and Pickett Mini and a reworked Aston Martin Vanquish, a particularly personal project given that Callum originally penned the Vanquish during his time at Aston Martin. With that experience under its belt, Callum's latest design could have a real chance at seeing the road; someone just needs deep enough pockets and a love akin to Callum's for the XJ220.You Might Also LikeIf You Can Only Own One Car, Make It One of TheseThese Are the Most Popular Cars by State
