Honda Odyssey minivan owners have filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California after the Japanese automaker announced it was recalling 440,830 Odyssey models from 2018 to 2022 due to a side and side-curtain airbag issue, which causes them to deploy when the vehicle goes over potholes and speed bumps.MotorBiscuit reported the recall in April, which affected many owners severely, as Honda admitted to receiving 25 reports of injuries due to the alleged defect. The NHTSA recall report stated that the Odyssey's "SRS ECU contains incorrect deployment parameters for the side and side curtain airbags, which may cause inadvertent deployment when the vehicle encounters strong road impacts, such as driving over potholes, speed bumps, or road debris."The airbag issue was first reported in November 2017, prompting Honda to launch an investigation that lasted until July 2021. Describing the source of the problem, the NHTSA stated that, "The SRS control logic for the second and third rows contain insufficient deployment threshold margin, allowing G-signal inputs to be misinterpreted as side impacts and causing inadvertent deployment of the side and side curtain airbags."AdvertisementAdvertisementApart from the injury reports, Honda received 130 warranty claims that were related to the airbag issue. As a solution to the problem, the authorized dealers "will reprogram or replace the SRS ECU with improved airbag deployment parameters, as necessary," the recall report stated. However, several Odyssey owners claim that the side airbag recall may not be enough to solve the problem. According to Carcomplaints.com, the class action lawsuits include affected Odyssey minivans from "California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Nebraska, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Texas."The Odyssey owners allege that their minivans have lost their resale value due to the airbag defect and subsequent recall. After all, the defect is a significant safety hazard. The lawsuit was filed weeks after Honda announced the minivan recall and before it mailed recall letters. Owners allege that dealers don't pay for repairs even when their vehicles are under warranty, with expenses ranging from $3,000 to as much as $11,000.Thus, the plaintiffs likely lack confidence that the issue will be resolved, as they allege that the recall may not permanently address the airbag problem.
