Mercedes may be making a bold attempt to drag the family van out of the world of pure utility and make it more aspirational instead. It's pitching its new VLE as more of an electric grand limousine, combining MPV versatility with some limousine-like attributes, which is certainly a different take than the norm. With this positioning, Mercedes is presenting something very different in character to Volkswagen's ID. Buzz. In the VW, you're looking at something that is more stylized, retro, and cool for your family adventures, while Mercedes is telling you that practical people moving doesn't have to be rudimentary and predictable at all. So, it's cool to have a side-by-side comparison between the two, even if one, in the shape of the Mercedes VLE, is still in the process of revelation. Space, Seats, And Everyday Family Duty Mercedes-BenzMercedes promises that it will give you up to eight seats in its new VLE and is clearly targeting a broad demographic, from VIP shuttle operators across to families. The company has started out with a strong brief and is creating a vehicle that can do the hard practical work of moving lots of people in some style, rather than treating this as a niche design exercise. For M-B, this seems to be a serious attempt to add some panache to the whole picture. It's not simply chasing buyers who want genuine three-row usefulness, but it wants them to spend their money on something that's not simply an appliance.Volkswagen has also created a real family hauler, but this one is not quite so serious. The ID. Buzz seems lighter with more playful energy even as it seats seven and has enough cargo figures to confirm that it's not a toy. Some initial reviewers felt that the ID. Buzz was far too much of a nostalgia machine that Volkswagen had just created for design-conscious parents, but its practical numbers suggest that it is a relatively serious and popular family machine.Mercedes does appear to be positioning its VLE as something broader than a pure family carrier. And if the VLE is to be a workhorse as well in the form of a more upmarket shuttle, then it may tell a slightly different story to the Buzz. The VLE will have more formal packaging and presence and perhaps a more Mercedes-like emphasis on in-vehicle experience. By contrast, the Buzz is nicely shaped around the idea of suburban life, including those school runs, weekend sports adventures, and summer escapes to the coast. And from a broader point of view, these manufacturers seem to be aiming at specific parts of this big market. The ID Buzz gets around the awkwardness of the minivan with some charm, while the VLE appears ready to solve that problem with status. On The Road, Power, Range And Comfort Mercedes-Benz Mercedes has said that it will focus heavily on efficiency, thermal management, recuperation, and dynamic behavior. It’s tested its VLE at Nardo to work on high-speed performance and to assess how its rear-axle steering system contributes to overall handling. Mercedes does appear to be taking this van quite seriously in terms of performance, and it has publicized that one prototype covered the 1,100 km (680 mile) journey between Stuttgart and Rome with only two 15-minute charging stops. This suggests that the VLE will be a good long-distance family and executive machine rather than a city-player, with highway composure and efficiency to match. There are plenty of statistics around the ID. Buzz detailing that US-spec rear-drive versions have a 91-kWh gross battery, which turns out 282 hp and gives an EPA-estimated range of 234 miles. There is an all-wheel drive 4MOTION version as well, with a slightly tighter range of 231. And while these figures are perfectly good enough for most family requirements and normal weekend travel, they don't exactly scream interstate dominance. You might need to plan your trip a little more carefully if you're going a long way with the current ID. Buzz. Charging, Road Trips, And Cost Of Ownership Mercedes-Benz The fact that Mercedes publicized that Stuttgart to Rome run tells us a great deal about the company's thought process, and it’s clearly not going to major on something like that unless it wants its buyers to understand its north star. The VLE will likely be a really strong contender when it comes to long-haul work, while it's also likely to be very suitable for daily use across different road types and conditions.Mercedes has now said that its VLE 300 will have a 115-kWh NMC battery on an 800 V architecture, and the 400 variant will have another motor to push power up to 409. Mercedes is suggesting more than 400 miles WLTP on a single charge but US-specific numbers are still pending. Expect more than 300 kW peak DC rate from the VLE, with a 10 to 80% time of around 25 minutes under ideal conditions. Some outlets suggest that you can add up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes.Over at Volkswagen, you can expect the 2025 ID. Buzz to charge from 10% to 80% in 26 minutes at up to 200 kW. The rear-drive version can recover 81 miles of range in ten minutes under maximum DC fast charging conditions, which is around about the norm today for modern family travel. Still, you wouldn't automatically say that the ID. Buzz is a great vehicle in terms of its long-distance capability and that's where Mercedes could hit the nail on its head by making that form of travel its defining strength. The Volkswagen ID. Buzz has a starting MSRP of $59,995 plus a $1,550 destination charge. You can also get a posher First Edition from $69,995 before destination, so you can be very clear on where the Buzz sits. The Mercedes VLE is likely to go on sale for around $100,000, but the exact price remains shrouded in mystery. It does seem that the VLE will sit well above the VW in terms of ambition, image, and price though. Tech And Daily Use Mercedes-Benz Mercedes will develop its VLE as part of its modular and scalable electric van architecture. It's not pitching the VLE as some kind of cargo van derivative that it will somehow polish up for private buyers, but it's designing it from the outset as a premium passenger vehicle that just happens to have a van form. The company has already said that it will focus on aerodynamics, thermal management, recuperation, and dynamic behavior and will feature rear axle steering. As you might expect from Mercedes, this all hints at real attention to detail. The company probably realizes that a big people mover will live or die according to how it feels when you're tired, dealing with a large group, or parking it in a tight lot. There is no ambiguity around the Buzz, as buyers know exactly what it is, what it costs, how far it goes, how much room it offers, and how fast it charges. Buyers also know that this is not necessarily a luxury proposition at all, and it’s far more of a known quantity. They already know that the Buzz will be easy to place in the driveway and get on with as a daily companion. By contrast, the VLE may turn out to be the more advanced and polished machine and try to be far more sophisticated, while the other one is just trying to be fun. Image, Personality, And Who They're For VolkswagenVolkswagen is milking the memory of its old Microbus without any shame, and the ID. Buzz leans in on this too. And with its available two-tone paint and impossibly friendly face, buyers may be making more of a lifestyle choice when they purchase this type of vehicle. This suggests that while Buzz buyers may need people-moving space, they may also want their practical EV to have a sense of humor.Meanwhile, the other Germans may be being more matter of fact and looking for an entirely different style of emotional response. There's not likely to be any nostalgia here, and Mercedes will likely ask buyers to think about what a van could be if it is somehow as serious as a premium luxury vehicle. After all, Mercedes' pre-launch language seems to revolve around limo-like behavior, grand limousine positioning, and VIP versatility. If Mercedes is about to teach Volkswagen a lesson, it may involve textbooks that redefine practicality. Volkswagen interprets its electric family van as being friendly and charming while being easy to understand and price, and this does make it enticing for many American families. Mercedes seems to be about to push the segment upward to a greater degree and more towards longer-distance luxury with a touch of added formality. And if the ID. Buzz wants to be delightfully informal and come across as the lovable extrovert, the Mercedes VLE may be something else entirely. It may eventually enter with a sense of occasion, comfort, and status and quietly try to redefine the room that way instead.Sources: Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen.
