Image Credit: FordFord had high hopes for the Mustang Mach-E, its electric SUV that took its name from the Mustang muscle car. By and large, it's a car that has been very well received. But the Blue Oval might soon stop production of its flagship electric car.At the moment, the company is developing its new Universal Electric Vehicle architecture. This is about levelling up its EV range, and affordable vehicles are at the heart of what it will produce. But at the time of writing, it doesn't look like the Mach-E will go onto the new platform. This wouldn't be the first time that Ford has abandoned one of its EVs. Just a few years after its introduction, it has already decided to cease production of the F-150 Lightning, the electric version of the F-150 pickup truck.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhen it comes to the Mach-E, it doesn't sound like production will end outright. But Ford has just not committed to moving the SUV onto its new EV platform, and will likely let it see out the remainder of its lifespan on the current platform. That may mean a new electric SUV emerges on the new platform. What Ford Is Planning With the Mustang Mach-EImage Credit: FordPhasing out the Mach-E would be a similar move to what Ford did with the F-150 Lightning. After there was a brief pause in production, it recommenced only for the company to pull the plug on the electric pickup truck. This came just after three model years on the market, and an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) will take its place.A midsize truck, priced around $30,000, will be the first vehicle to sit on the new UEV platform from the Blue Oval. Regarding the Mustang Mach-E, it won't be making a sudden disappearance like the F-150 Lightning. Given the EV is selling better than the regular Mustang, Ford would be crazy to take it out of its current lineup. In 2025, Ford sold 51,620 units of the Mach-E. A very respectable number, and the electric car is well regarded globally. The big difference here, though, is that it won't move to the new UEV platform. Instead, the Mach-E will remain on the current platform while the company works on a new generation of the SUV. But there is no timeline for when a new version will be introduced, with the current generation making its debut back in 2020. But don't worry, as Ford isn't just going to let the Mach-E age and become obsolete.Ford Is Planning Yearly Updates for the Mach-EImage Credit: FordThe SUV is to undergo yearly updates to keep it fresh in terms of software, hardware, and in other areas, such as the cabin. But a few cost-cutting measures are being implemented. The front trunk, or frunk, for example, is to be optional, and won't be offered as standard. The seatback map pockets at the back of the driver and front passenger seats are also being removed.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhere the Mach-E goes from here will be very interesting to watch. Ford is competing in a very competitive market, with the likes of the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 all offering an excellent alternative to what the Blue Oval can offer. It won't be easy for the American manufacturer to keep up with its rivals. But, with the Mach-E still quite a popular EV, it does stand a fighting chance. If you want more stories like this, follow Guessing Headlights on Yahoo so you don't miss what's coming next.
