Right now, Jaguar has approximately zero new vehicles on sale. The beleaguered British brand is going headstrong into the electric world with a large car that has been polarizing to say the least. It debuted in 2024 in concept form called the Type 00. Now, we finally know what the production version will be called. And well, it's a logical choice, if a tad dry. With so many classic designations to draw from throughout Jaguar's history, could we have an E-Type revival? A new XJ? Maybe even something with a modern flare, like an F-Type? Not exactly. The first Jaguar concept was Type 00. So now, say hello to the production car: Jaguar Type 01. Type 01: The First Car Of A New Era Jaguar No, Type 01 isn't a very imaginative name. But Jaguar does offer some insight into the decision behind it. In short, this is a new car for a new era, so it all starts at square one. Or Type 01, if you will."We have reimagined Jaguar for a new era, with inspiration from what has gone before. Our engineers have achieved this with a vehicle that looks and drives like no other electric car, yet reflects a unique provenance. The Type 01 name is part of that story – for me, the zero also signifies a complete brand reset, and the '1', our first car for a new chapter, a 'one of a kind!'"-Rawdon Glover, Jaguar managing directorGoing a little deeper into the psychology of the name, Jaguar also explains that 0 not only signifies a brand reset, but also identifies this car as producing zero emissions. Lest we forget, despite the exceedingly long hood on both the 00 Concept and Type 01 prototypes, this is purely an electric car. And thus far, Jaguar has provided no indications that it's altering course away from an all-electric future. The Type 01 Will Be Exceedingly Fast JaguarIf the name doesn't stir your soul, upwards of 1,000 horsepower probably will. With the name announcement, Jaguar hasn't dished out fresh details but further confirms the 01's powertrain. Three electric motors will combine to make 1,000 metric hp, which equates to only 986 hp in SAE measurements. Torque will be, in a word, biblical, at "over" 1,300 Newton meters," which is approximately 959 pound-feet. That's not too far behind a Ram 3500 one-ton pickup with a 6.7-liter Cummins under the hood.Big power doesn't mean the first new Jag in years will be a Nürburgring killer, however. Jaguar is shifting itself upmarket, with aspirations of battling Rolls-Royce and Bentley in the ultra-luxury segment. It's a big shift for the brand that, for its entire history, has been luxurious but still somewhat attainable for the masses. This car will be a big GT machine, cruising swiftly and silently while hustling its occupants along in comfort. Will Jaguar Survive This Transition? JaguarMuch has already been said about Jag's decision to completely step away from internal combustion power. Jaguar dealers, who are even now running through their final allotments of F-Pace SUVs, have voiced concern that this transition simply won't work. At the very least, having just one vehicle to sell, presumably a very expensive one at that, doesn't bode well for floor traffic. And while EVs are still progressing in Europe, it's a different story in the US. At this point, every automaker has done at least a partial about-face on future EV plans. So it's no exaggeration to say Jaguar literally has everything riding on this one vehicle. The single Type 01 image Jaguar supplied shows the name on the cowling, where the hood meets up with the windshield. We'll have to wait until later this year to see more – a full debut is promised by the end of 2026 with cars finally going on sale at some point in 2027. An SUV based on the Type 01 architecture should follow at some point.
