Driver Shares Little-Known Car Feature. You Can Now Open Your Mexican Coke Right from Your Car

Pretty much every single production car comes with a bottle opener—you just gotta know where to look for it. This little-known fact has gained newfound appreciation online.

TikToker Kassandra Sisk (@kassandrasisk) demonstrates where folks can locate this esoteric piece of beverage-enjoying equipment. All you need to do is crack open your door and look at its jamb.

Sisk calls this trick the “best thing [she] could have ever learned.” She documents the hack in a TikTok that’s accrued over 551,000 views. In it, Sisk can be seen holding a glass bottle of Coca-Cola (Mexican Coke). Then she angles the top of the bottle’s cap into the latch on the inner door jamb. After several attempts, she’s able to open it.

Do Door Latches Double as Bottle Openers?

This nifty method for popping tops has been circulating the web for a while. Last year, Men’s Journal featured the tip in an article delineating several other ways folks can use everyday objects to crack open a cold one.

However, it should be noted that stressing the metal on your vehicle’s door jamb striker plate could cause issues over time. Chipping the striker plate may ultimately prevent the latch from catching. Which means you may have problems opening and closing your door.

A Facebook user also compiled a list of six different ways to open bottles using a car. These consist of using leverage to pry it open with various parts—even the window. He places the lip of the cap on the edge of the window, which he then follows as it travels upwards. When it closes, it snaps the top off. Although it’s not hard to imagine cracking your window using this method.

Are Vehicles Equipped with Dedicated Bottle Openers?

There was a time when most vehicles were equipped with dedicated bottle openers.

Ford Authority published an article in February showing off a variety of potential tailgate attachments for its trucks. Included in this list are concept drawings detailing where car owners can install bottle openers. Fans of the Ford Maverick are quick to point out that the car manufacturer has outfitted the truck with a dedicated bottle opener, too.

A Reddit user noted that the Ford Bronco Sport gas has a bottle opener on the right side rear liftgate jamb, as well. A Ford dealership showcased in a Facebook video said that the F-150 is rigged with “two bottle openers attached to the tailgate.”

But Should You Open a Bottle With Your Car?

People were torn about opening their bottle the way Sisk demonstrates.

One thought it was a practice in unsanitary behavior. “Instant cold sore, but,” they wrote.

Another didn’t seem too impressed by her discovery: “Been knowing this. Feel like every[one] should know how to open a bottle with anything.”

“I did it and it broke my bottle,” warned a third.

“I did this once and shattered the bottle in my hand and had to get stitches,” someone else echoed.

But others were quick to provide their own unconventional bottle opening tricks. “Use the metal on the seat belt. It works too,” one wrote.

Another espoused a more feral approach to imbibing: “I may be insane but I just open it with my teeth,” they said.

But what if the thirst strikes when there isn’t a vehicle around? One person says all you need is some spare change.

“My boyfriend taught me how to use any sized coin to open any type of bottle. And it’s now my favorite party trick,” they said.

Motor1 has reached out to Sisk via TikTok comment for further information. We'll update this if she responds.
