The cumulative European sales of the Seal U PHEV reached 72,667 units in 2025. According to statistics from DataForce cited by InsideEVs, BYD’s Seal U became the best-selling plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in Europe in 2025. Although 2025 marked the Seal U’s first full year on sale in Europe, its PHEV variant has already surpassed long-established mainstream models such as the Volkswagen Tiguan, Volvo XC60 and Ford Kuga in sales. Data show that cumulative European sales of the Seal U PHEV reached 72,667 units in 2025, ranking first in the PHEV segment. Best-selling PHEVs in Europe for 2025 By comparison, sales of the Volkswagen Tiguan PHEV totaled 65,899 units over the same period, followed by the Volvo XC60 PHEV at 60,088 units and Ford Kuga PHEV at 41,983 units. In terms of growth rates, sales of the Tiguan PHEV surged 177.9% year on year in 2025, but still fell short of the Seal U. BYD Seal U The Volvo XC60 PHEV saw a modest decline of 1.4%, while the Ford Kuga PHEV posted a 3.8% drop. Notably, the Seal U does not lead on technical specifications. It is equipped with an 18.3 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering around 80 km of electric-only range, while the Tiguan PHEV uses a 19.7 kWh ternary lithium battery with an electric range of up to 126 km. Pricing has been a key factor behind the Seal U’s market breakthrough. In Germany, the entry-level Seal U is priced at €39,990 ($46,800), significantly undercutting European rivals in the same segment. By comparison, the Tiguan eHybrid starts at €52,215 ($61,100), the Volvo XC60 PHEV is priced from €67,990 ($79,600), and the Ford Kuga PHEV costs €47,100 ($55,100). VW Tiguan eHybrid The Seal U’s strong performance also reflects BYD’s broader acceleration in the European market. In December 2025 alone, BYD recorded monthly sales of 28,023 units in Europe, up 261% year on year, making it the automaker with the largest incremental sales increase in the market that month. Looking at the full year, BYD, including its Denza brand, saw European sales surge 276% year on year to 186,612 units in 2025, ranking second among Chinese brands in Europe, behind only SAIC’s MG. In China, the Seal U corresponds to the Song PLUS. Official data show that cumulative sales of the Song PLUS in China reached 400,920 units in 2025, making it BYD Group’s second-best-selling single model lineup for the year.
