BYD has launched its battery energy storage system (BESS), named Haohan, in Japan, marking a key step in its global storage strategy. The Haohan battery boxes are manufactured in Zhejiang, China, and exported to Japanese developers. Delivery occurs within six months of order; pricing varies by scale and is not publicly disclosed. The identities of the first Japanese customers remain undisclosed. BYD Haohan Energy System Haohan is the next-generation storage system unveiled by BYD in September last year. It features the world’s largest 2710Ah blade batteries, offering over 300% higher capacity than conventional storage cells. The system’s smallest unit holds 14.5MWh. A 20-foot equivalent container can accommodate 10MWh, with a Vcts of 52.1%, 39.7% above industry averages. High-density integration delivers practical advantages—constructing a 1GWh storage site requires only 69 units versus 145 traditional containers, reducing footprint by 33%. BYD’s Cao Hu, head of Energy Storage and New Battery Division, said the system follows a “big but simple” design philosophy, using fewer boxes, smaller footprint, and simplified management to enhance integration. Japan plans to raise renewable energy to 36%-38% by 2030. Solar and wind fluctuations demand storage support, making Haohan a strategic fit for the market. BYD shipped over 60GWh of BESS in 2025, capturing 13% of the global market and ending Tesla’s two-year leadership. Tesla followed with 46.7GWh (10%), Sungrow at 9%; together, the top three firms account for about one-third of global capacity. Top 10 BESS system integrators, 2025 By end-2025, BYD had shipped over 135GWh of storage systems and completed more than 650 large-scale projects across 110 countries. Notable projects include 12.5GWh grid storage with Saudi Power and 2.6GWh solar-plus-storage in Chile’s central oasis. Japan’s top 20 auto sales data for April BYD’s growing presence in Japan supports its energy business. From January to April 2026, BYD sold 1,486 passenger vehicles in Japan, up 92.7% YoY, and operates over 70 local sales points, laying the foundation for Haohan deployment.
