The convertible SUV is one of the rarest and most unusual vehicle body styles. Convertibles are generally focused on style, while a good SUV is typically praised for its utilitarian capabilities, boxy styling, and practicality. These conflicting ideas don't seem to gel, but there's some substance to it, and this style of vehicle is hardly new.The hardtop SUV convertible actually traces its roots back to a Willys MB from World War II. The military wanted an all-wheel-drive vehicle that could drop its top and allow soldiers to stick their guns out. Fast-forward to the 1966 Ford Bronco, and America began its love affair with these unique vehicles. Although none of the vehicles below are traditional convertibles — in the sense that you can press a button and simply watch the roof disappear — they all offer open-air motoring, provided you're willing to put in some elbow grease to get the roof off.Vehicles are assigned a BuzzScore in relation to their direct segment competitors, and as such, vehicles in this list, while similarly scored, do not necessarily compete directly against one another. GMC Hummer EV SUV Find [[default_name]] and more cars for sale on our MarketplaceShop NowThe first convertible SUV on this rather short list is the GMC Hummer EV SUV: a massive, full-electric powerhouse that can dominate in a drag race then plow through off-road trails in the same afternoon. Since the H1, Hummer has been known for road presence and capability, and this model certainly carries on tradition. It's not exactly a "drop top" SUV, though, since you have to remove individual body panels to see the sky.The Hummer EV SUV has off-road features like Crab Walk (rear steering at low speeds), a new King Crab function (the rear wheels turn up to two times as much as the front to swing the rear of the vehicle in either direction), adaptive air suspension that can raise or lower the ride height for "Extract Mode," and more. It comes with 35-inch tires and underbody cameras to see exactly where those tires are placed on a trail, too.Moving to the interior, the driver sits behind a 12.3-inch digital display next to a 13.4-inch infotainment screen. While this SUV convertible is extremely expensive, our road tester found the interior to be relatively far from the most luxurious — it's rugged and durable, but not as plush as its price tag suggests. The Hummer EV SUV has plenty of modern tech, though, including GM's SuperCruise driving assist. Its convertible features are also impressive: Infinity Roof with Removable Sky Panels (transparent panels for an open-air feel) Modular roof design with easily stowable panels in the front trunk (frunk) Power rear drop glass, opening up the cabin further "There is so much power on tap, passing slower traffic becomes completely trivial. Just slam the throttle, and the Hummer jumps in front of almost any vehicle. Deploying the three electric motors causes the soft air suspension to lurch the vehicle, squatting the rear end and sending the front end skyward: It truly feels like the Hummer wants to pop a wheelie."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz Ford Bronco Find [[default_name]] and more cars for sale on our MarketplaceShop NowSUVs with removable tops don't have to be six-figure investments, as proven by the Ford Bronco. Ford offers seven trims, including the Raptor variant, with the base model starting at $40,495 and the Raptor starting at $79,995 before destination and options. Two-door and four-door configurations are available, depending on which trim you choose.Depending on which trim level you choose, your Bronco could come with a 2.3L or 2.7L turbo four-cylinder that makes either 300 or 330 horsepower. Stepping up to the top of the food chain, the Raptor provides 418 hp, which our road tester explains is more than enough to carve up sand dunes and rocky trails alike. On the inside, the Bronco can feel as simple and grounded as a Wrangler in the base trim, but it turns into a pleasant, comfortable ride in its higher trims. No matter which model you get, though, you'll always have an option to equip the dual top roof. 2-door models come with standard hardtop; 4-doors come with standard soft top "Dual top" option available on any model Removable doors with storage bags to keep them protected while off the vehicle "With the diffs set to deal with the sand, confidence comes quickly at speed, but it becomes about mechanical grip slowing down for super-tight second-gear kinks in sandy trails. Even without airing down the 37-inch all-terrain tires but keeping the momentum and power consistent, the Braptor just carved through like a sports car on a canyon road."- Ian Wright, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzz Jeep Wrangler Find [[default_name]] and more cars for sale on our MarketplaceShop Now The best convertible SUV, according to decades of tradition and a cult following, is the Jeep Wrangler. It's the epitome of open-top off-road driving. The Wrangler is available in seven trims, when counting the all-new Moab 392 variant, with some acting as a soft top SUV with a retractable cloth roof. Pricing starts at $34,895 for the base model Sport trim in a two-door configuration — the Moab 392, on the other hand, starts at $79,995 to top the lineup. As far as convertible SUVs go, the Wrangler is a classic that can't be forgotten. Depending on your configuration and trim, you could have a naturally-aspirated V6 paired with a 6-speed manual, a more efficient and nearly as powerful turbocharged four-cylinder, or the impressive Hemi V8 with its 470 horsepower. Keep in mind, though, that this is still a Jeep — it's not particularly upscale at any trim level, though it comes with some modern tech like Apple CarPlay, available winch on some trims, removable doors and roof panels, and more to make it worth considering. Our road tester drove the current version and found it to have improved both on- and off-road driving experiences. The Wrangler's roof features include the following: Classic soft-top and hard-top options for customization. Sky One-Touch Power Top for effortless roof retraction. Removable doors for a true open-air feel. Half-door option for more airflow while keeping some protection. "Buyers who crave peak off-road performance may want to step up to the Rubicon, which adds a Rock-Trac full-time transfer case with a 4:1 4LO ratio, front sway-bar disconnect, off-road cameras, available 35-inch tires, and available Warn winch."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-At-Large, CarBuzz Advice For Choosing A New Convertible SUV If you’re set on this type of car, there isn’t an extensive convertible SUV list for 2026. There are also no more convertible crossover SUVs, following the discontinuation of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible. GMC says the Hummer EV SUV is neither a traditional body-on-frame design nor a unibody, due to the unique configuration of the Ultium platform. You’ll likely be deciding between a Jeep or Ford, and the former has taken its most successful model of all time and turned it into a version with a removable roof. There are multiple roof configurations available for the models on our list, and you should ensure you're at ease with the roof removal process of each before making a final decision. Pros And Cons Of Convertible SUVs There are a few things to consider when you’re looking at a new SUV with a removable top or retractable roof: Pros Open-air driving is a novelty in the SUV segment Roofs can be relatively easily removed Bulky or tall items can be more easily stowed with the roof off Cons Very few options in this segment Reduced crash protection in an accident Storing the removable roof can be a challenge 2025 Jeep Wrangler Willys 41 Edition Are these types of vehicles still safe in the event of a collision? While authorities such as the IIHS and the NHTSA don’t often rate low-volume cabrios like the Jeep with its roof off, the rag-top version still ships with the same number of airbags and assistance features. Of course, driving a car with the doors and roof removed will negatively impact how safe it is, and wearing a seat belt in a vehicle like this becomes even more important.Sources: Jeep, GMC, Ford
