This is a great starting point if you're looking for something in the $35k - $45k price bracket.Vehicles are assigned a BuzzScore in relation to their direct segment competitors, and as such, vehicles in this list, while similarly scored, do not necessarily compete directly against one another. Lexus NX We all know what Lexus SUVs are good for: reliability, space, and efficiency. With three powertrain options in the NX and a chassis that underpins the all-encompassing Toyota RAV4, this is the best premium Japanese crossover for most people in a competitive market. The hybrid powertrain is the cheapest option, and we think it's the one that most people should gon for, as it will save you money in the long-term compared to the gas-only version with over 40 mpg. Mazda CX-90 The Mazda CX-90 is one of a few three-row cars on this list, and thanks to a minimalist design, it's one that looks like it costs more than just $40k. While the efficient CX-90 jumps slightly out of our price bracket, the powerful inline-six turbo engine has 340 horsepower in its most potent form and when you pair that with Mazda's great driving dynamics, it's a complete package, whichever seat you're in. It also has standard AWD, impressive for a sub-$40k car. Hyundai Ioniq 5 With its pixelated and industrial design, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 has quickly become a popular choice in a tricky EV segment. For under $45k, you're locked out of the top trim (by only 75 dollars), but the SEL trim still gets 318 miles on a charge and has lots of features to justify the price. Wireless smartphone connectivity, wireless charging and a power-passenger seat are all standard, but we'd swallow the slightly higher price for the upper trim as it has lots more features to justify the price."On winding roads, it handles beautifully with four levels of regenerative braking and true one-pedal driving that is exceptionally easy to modulate. It takes almost no time to become accustomed to the braking, so it’s second nature. Cycle through the drive modes to either focus on efficiency or performance, all depending on your mood. This is a remarkably comfortable and enjoyable ride whether you’re behind the wheel or in the passenger seat."- Nicole Wakelin, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzz Kia Carnival Kia Carnivals show that you don't need an SUV to fit the whole family. 145.1 cubic feet of maximum cargo space is seriously impressive, and with its lower ride height than an SUV, it'll be easier to get in and out of for the kids. A hybrid powertrain has a quoted efficiency figure of 32 mpg and 608 miles of range, making it the perfect road trip car. Adults can easily fit in the back with almost 36 inches of legroom, and there are USB ports in the back, too. Ram 1500 The Ram 1500 is the biggest pickup truck that you can get for under $45k, and that also gets you keyless entry, six seats and 45 inches of rear legroom. With the Express trim, you also get a 1,730 lb payload capacity and 8,320 lbs of towing capacity, making it the most capable vehicle on this list. Ram also offers a 10-year or 100,000 mile powertrain warranty as well as 60 months of roadside recovery for peace of mind. Toyota Grand Highlander The hybrid Toyota Grand Highlander may be ten dollars over our budget, but that doesn't mean the gas model should be glossed over. The most expensive trim in our budget has a 2.4L turbo four-cylinder that has a towing capacity of 5,000 lbs and 265 horsepower. As it's a Toyota, you'll also get stellar reliability and fuel figures, which are 24 mpg combined on this model. Inside, a 12.3-inch media system, wireless charging and 13 (yes, 13) cupholders and bottleholders. BMW X1 The BMW X1 is the closest thing the Bavarians have to a hot hatch in the States thanks to a powerful 241-hp engine and confident handling characteristics. All-wheel-drive comes as standard in this small SUV, and even though it's the smallest in the lineup, it still has 37 inches of legroom in the back. The interior is premium and well-built, but there are lots of screens that can put some people off. What you buy this for, however, are the handling characteristics, and they deliver."Though it wasn't designed to be the Ultimate Driving Machine, the X1 delivers a hatchback-like playfulness that feels ripe for the M treatment. It's more spacious inside and boasts class-leading technology. If we had to recommend an entry-level subcompact crossover, the X1 would now be right at the top."- Jared Rosenholtz, Editor-at-Large, CarBuzz Volvo XC40 Swedish minimalism is put into a small package with the XC40, as it feels just like its XC90 bigger brother in a smaller body. Starting at $41k, this SUV gets a mild hybrid powertrain, 247 horsepower and a 26 mpg fuel efficiency figure. There are lots of safety features inside (as you'd expect) like whiplash injury protection, knee airbags, and cross traffic alert. While it might not be the most exciting option in the list, it's a dependable choice for any situation and keeps you safe should the worst happen. Acura Integra Hatchbacks are a dying breed, but the Acura Integra tries to stop that from happening. This shape of vehicle helps with driving dynamics, something Acura is already known for, and a 200-hp engine is just enough for most people. While the Type S gets all the praise, the spec just below, the A-Spec, has a great manual transmission, a lightweight flywheel and an adaptive damper system to make corners more engaging. This spec also gets you a 16-speaker system, which includes two overhead speakers and a cargo subwoofer. Hyundai Santa Fe While there are two powertrain options for the Hyundai Santa Fe, we think the hybrid option is the best for most people. It helps get this heavy family hauler going with extra torque, has more power when getting up to speed, and will return better mileage figures while doing all that work. It's a 1.6L four-cylinder with 231 horsepower. There's a distinct style with the Santa Fe that we think makes it pretty handsome, and inside you'll find a large wraparound screen that surrounded by knobs to control the temperature, which are always worth extra points."Given that the Santa Fe is a family SUV designed for comfort and practicality and the hybrid delivers a smoother driving experience with enough power for day-to-day life, it's a fantastic choice for most people. It may have lower power figures than the gas-only model, but the electric motor smooths out power delivery from a standing start and relieves the load on the transmission, which makes for a smoother driving experience."- Ian Wright, Senior Road Tester, CarBuzz The Characteristics Of Cars Under $45k There are a lot of cars in the US that fall within this particular price segment, and they come in all different shapes and sizes.
