Companies such as Waymo and Uber have been working hard to make them a reality, and cities such as Atlanta are beginning to see them used more widely. But it also appears that they are causing lots of problems.A strange scenario recently played out in Atlanta, and it involved three of Waymo's taxis at an intersection. A TikTok video showed the situation clearly when three self-driving taxis appeared to come to a halt at an intersection, causing a huge traffic buildup.Content creator @reel_world45 was the one who shared the ordeal, which took place at night in the heart of the city. Three Waymos are visible, completely stopped thanks to a flashing red light, clearly thinking that they were stuck at a solid red light and unable to move on.AdvertisementAdvertisementAll sorts of comments can be heard in the background of the video, as onlookers and fellow motorists appear in disbelief at what is actually happening. It is a somewhat amusing situation, but also one that clearly frustrated everyone who was stuck behind the taxis. Why Were the Waymo Self-Driving Taxis Unable To Move?As we can see in the video, the three cars were sitting at a flashing red light and had decided to stay where they were. A flashing red light on American roads means stop, but proceed when it is safe to do so. A human would look around at the situation and begin to move off accordingly. However, in this situation, there was no human at the controls of the taxis. So the three Waymo vehicles just sat there, not moving, and seemingly unable to decipher that they could move. "We got three Waymos that think the light is red," a man can be heard shouting in the background. Three taxis were blocking three lanes, so nobody could just drive around the self-driving cars. Everyone behind was stuck."Say no to Waymo's," the on-screen text said in the TikTok video. Onlookers and other drivers were simply in disbelief at the situation. You can also hear some laughter at the situation, but there is a lot of cursing and yelling too, as they implore the self-driving taxis to get out of the way. "Man, the Waymos think the light is red, bruh," another onlooker can be heard venting. Others were amazed that three turned up at once to block all three lanes. That is another level of bad luck. Are Self-Driving Taxis More Trouble Than They Are Worth? This whole incident does seem to back up many people's thoughts that these taxis are causing problems. And it isn't the first time it has happened in Atalanta either. CBS Evening News reported that one neighborhood had 40 to 50 of the taxis get stuck after they stopped near a green traffic man. The sight of the cars, which are converted Jaguar SUVs, all struck, was amusing, but also frustrating. The SUVs were confused by the small traffic man, placed to help with traffic. The Waymos had no idea how to handle it.AdvertisementAdvertisementThis happened in May 2026. Before that, 38 of the taxis had been recalled, as a software flaw was causing them to be very confused by standing water, and one had driven into flood waters in Texas. Some have even been reported to block emergency vehicles. Another 4,000 Waymo taxis were recently recalled as they had begun to enter freeway construction zones. It appears that these taxis might be more trouble than they are worth.
