The analyst mentioned that Chinese domestic brands significantly improved their global presence in ten years. According to data shared by Cui Dongshu, BYD took the 6th place in the top-10 automakers. Its global market share soared from 0.6% in 2016 to 4.8% in the first half of 2026. It is worth noting that the company marked a bigger global market share of 5.4% in 2025. However, 2026 appeared to be challenging for BYD as its domestic sales declined. According to China EV DataTracker, BYD delivered 795,169 units in H1 2026 in China, down 45.9% Year-Over-Year. For comparison, this automaker secured 1.5% of the market share in 2016. It is worth noting that Geely Holding Group’s market results include statistics of Volvo, Smart, Polestar, Lotus, Proton, and other brands controlled by Geely. Chery occupied the 9th place on the list with a global market share matching Ford at 4.1%. Ten years ago, Chery had a market share of 0.8%. However, this company was considered the leading Chinese car exporter. Speaking about other Chinese car makers in the list, SAIC took the 11th place with a market share of 3.7%. The 17th and 18th spots were shared by Changan (1.9%) and GWM (1.8%), respectively. BAIC took the 21st spot with a market share of 1.2%. Dongfeng secured the 23rd position (1.1%). For clarity, Toyota became the largest automaker by market share in H1 2026, securing 11% of the global market. Volkswagen is the runner-up with a market share of 8.1%.
