When you’re walking back to your car after a long day of work, the last thing you want to see is your vehicle blocked in by an inconsiderate car parker. That's exactly what a TikTok user who goes by Aya (@aya.na.inez) on the platform says happened to her. In the video, she records the scene she encountered after she ended her shift. Aya’s Nissan sedan is parked within the lines of her space. But right beside it is a white crossover SUV that clearly has one of its wheels resting on the parking space lines. In a text overlay of her video, Aya writes, "Get off work and this is the type of nonsense I deal with." To make matters worse, she heads on over to the other vehicle parked next to her car and reveals that it, too, is boxing her in, making it nearly impossible for her to squeeze into her ride. She writes in the video’s caption that she had no choice but to hit the white car while trying to get into her Nissan. Commenters Sound Off Several people who replied to Aya’s video expressed frustration with the owner of the white crossover's lack of parking etiquette. "How much you wanna bet those spaces say compact cars only?" one wrote. Another person replied, "I’d call the tow company." This was a sentiment someone else echoed, writing, "Tow. I don’t play that." But many other users on the application were also baffled by how small the parking spots seemed. "I think that’s a parking lot for bikes," one quipped. "Why them spaces so tiny?" another asked. However, others speculated that the parking spaces looked small because they were designated for compact vehicles only. "Kinda looks like y’all are all parked in compact spots based on the lines," one wrote. And this other TikTok user agreed: "Those spots look like they’re for compact cars." "I see 3 full-sized vehicles parked in compact car spots. Yes, white car is on the line, but TBH you’re all in the wrong," another person stated. Tell us what you think! View Comments Yet another TikToker chimed in, too, sharing their own assessment of the situation. "The average parking space in the United States is 7 feet wide and 18 feet long. These are compact parking spaces that look 6 feet wide and 13-14 feet long and it’s full of mid-sized vehicles." Compact VS Full-Size Parking Spaces The roadwork company We Love Paving published an article on standardized parking space practices in the United States. According to the business, the standard perpendicular parking space in America has a total area of 162 square feet. This is 9 feet wide and 18 feet long. However, angled parking spaces require a bit more room, We Love Paving writes. If a space is diagonally situated, pavers must reserve 180 square feet per space, with a length of 20 feet and a width of 9 feet. These figures drop considerably for compact cars, however. Smaller vehicles have 128 square feet designated for parking, with a minimum length of 16 feet and a width of 8 feet. Trucks and trailers, unsurprisingly, need much more room—at least 40 feet long and 12 feet wide. And different parts of the U.S. have different parking ordinances, too. In New York City, for instance, parallel parking spaces are 8.5 feet wide and 23 feet long. Los Angeles drivers enjoy 9-foot-wide and 18-foot-long perpendicular parking spaces. In Europe, where vehicle sizes are smaller on average, the typical parking space is around 8.2 feet wide and 16.4 feet long. Additionally, We Love Paving says that parking garages or "dense areas" have 8’ x 16’ parking spaces for compact vehicles. Parking Space Grievances The company also writes that when creating a parking lot, builders shouldn’t ignore "aisle space" as "tight aisles cause collisions and frustration." This is exactly what Aya said happened in her video, and she isn’t the only one who’s hopped on the internet to voice their disdain for individuals with poor parking etiquette. One Reddit user on the r/mildlyinfuriating sub shared an image they took of a parking lot, where several cars were shown parked over the lines of spaces or right on top of them. What appears to have happened here is a "chain reaction" of sorts. One driver who parks too close to the line or directly on it prevents another driver from giving themselves enough room to exit their vehicle. Some drivers, fed up with the lack of parking acumen among other commuters, have devised ways to exact revenge. Like this one person who printed out a black and white drawing of a turtle. On the same sheet of paper, a message accompanies the animated reptile: "Many three year olds have trouble staying within the lines. Maybe if you practice coloring this turtle, it will help with your parking." What Should You Do If You’re Blocked In A Parking Garage? Depending on the situation, blocking a vehicle isn’t just a minor inconvenience; it could be against the law. Smart Space Living writes that “blocking someone in a parking lot can be considered illegal if it meets certain criteria.” If an individual blocks an emergency vehicle, then the owner of said vehicle can face criminal charges if they’re impeding emergency work. And if a person has been intentionally blocked in a parking garage while they’re otherwise abiding by local ordinances, then the blocker could be charged with false imprisonment, Smart Space Living writes. Moreover, the outlet writes that “blocking someone in a parking lot is indeed illegal.” And whoever the offending party is will be subject to whatever an area’s local laws pertaining to such a traffic violation are, such as obstruction, impeding traffic, and any other parking violations. The same article recommends attempting to locate the owner of the vehicle first to move their car, if possible. If not, document the incident, take photos and videos, and contact authorities so you can access your ride. Motor1 has reached out to Aya via TikTok comment for further information.
