The X-Trail Rock Creek Multi-Bed is a new option for the Japanese market. It transforms the rugged Rock Creek trim into a two-person sleeper without any aftermarket modifications. If the X-Trail name sounds unfamiliar, you probably know it as the Nissan Rogue. The Rogue and X-Trail share the same platform. The X-Trail sells in more than 90 countries. Nissan has moved over 8 million of them worldwide since the model launched in 2000.What the Kit IncludesThe Multi-Bed upgrade is a three-panel platform mattress system. It folds and stores behind the second-row seats during normal driving. At camp, you unfold the second row flat and set the mattress across the entire cargo area. It runs from behind the front seats straight to the tailgate. Sleeping area measures 180 x 115 cm, or about 71 x 45 inches. That is just under 6 feet long. The mattress is 6 cm thick (about 2.4 inches) and wrapped in Cordura fabric. That is the same tough nylon used in quality gear bags and boots. The cover is water resistant. Red stitching matches the Rock Creek interior accents. The platform rests on legs and support rails rather than sitting flat on the floor. That leaves usable storage space under the bed. A hard floor panel comes with the kit to keep that under-bed area flat and organized. You can stow boots, tools, or gear under there while you sleep.The Rock Creek FoundationThe Rock Creek trim is Nissan's outdoor-focused package. In Japan it comes with 19-inch aluminum wheels, black roof rails, a hands-free power tailgate, and a distinctive silver-slot grille. Buyers can add a roof basket, rock rails, mud flaps, and fender flares through optional packages. Under the hood, the X-Trail Rock Creek runs Nissan's e-Power hybrid system with e-4orce all-wheel drive. A 1.5-liter variable compression turbo three-cylinder acts as a generator. It powers 201 horsepower at the front axle and 134 horsepower at the rear through electric motors. It is not a plug-in hybrid. The engine charges the battery as you drive.Pricing and AvailabilityThe X-Trail Rock Creek Multi-Bed debuted at the Tokyo Auto Salon earlier this year. It is available to order now in Japan. Base price is 5,327,300 yen, roughly $33,550 USD. The Multi-Bed option itself adds about 570,900 yen, or approximately $3,575, over the standard Rock Creek price. Nissan says it added this option because Japanese buyers increasingly want SUVs capable of overnight stays. That trend is not unique to Japan. The overland and car-camping market in the US has grown steadily for years.What It Could Mean for Rogue OwnersNissan has not announced any plan to bring the Multi-Bed kit to the United States for the Rogue. The bed is also slightly short at just under 6 feet, which can be tight for taller sleepers in the US market. That said, the concept proves out well. A factory-built, purpose-fitted bed kit from the manufacturer means consistent fitment, proper materials, and warranty coverage. Aftermarket options for the Rogue exist, but they require more research and assembly. If you own a Rogue and want to build something similar now, Pacific Adventure Worksmakes a Hideaway Double 40 platform that fits the Rogue and runs about $800 without a mattress. Add an inflatable pad and you can get close to what Nissan built for a fraction of the price. Nissan has been building out its factory camper lineup in Japan for several years through its Autech tuning and customization arm. This is the first one based on an SUV rather than a van. Given how popular the Rogue platform is globally, it makes sense that Nissan tested the concept on the X-Trail first. No word yet on a US launch. But the hardware exists. The platform is already sold here. If demand is there, the kit could follow.
