Ferrari only built 499 SP2 Monza variants from the Icona Series between 2019 and 2022. One of them has popped up for auction through Car & Classic, so it's time to sell a kidney and the kids on eBay and drop a bid. Or, like us, you could sigh and wish for the money it will no doubt take to score this modified bonkers speedster. This particular example is finished in Monza Red with a black interior, a fitting finish for a car inspired by three legendary 1950s-era race cars. With the SP1 and SP2 Monza models, Ferrari paid homage to the 750 Monza, 250 Testa Rossa, and 166 MM, but with a modern chassis and a V12 making 800 horsepower. Insane Performance, No Windshield Car & Classic The most noticeable aspect of the SP Monza (the number denotes the number of seats in the car) is that it looks suspiciously like a Ferrari 812 Superfast with the roof cut off and the windshield removed. That's because the basis of the car is the Superfast, but the essence is a pure homage to the lost art of the speedster. Historically, a speedster is a car with minimal bodywork to make it lighter and lessen air resistance.By the 1950s, speedsters tended to keep their main bodywork as engineers had worked out that a smooth shape moved through the air better, but an upright windshield was still a hindrance. Purpose-built race cars held on to the speedster ethos beyond the 1950s, but the roadster replaced it for consumers because a windshield means you don't need goggles to see. And also, you won't have to pick flies out of your teeth every time you go for a drive. Rarity On Top Of Rarity Car & Classic There is still a niche market for the hardcore wind-in-the-face experience, and anyone that's driven something like an Ariel Atom can tell you it's an exhilarating one. But the SP2 takes it to the craziest degree if you want to thrill a passenger as well. The lack of roof and windscreen along with the new bodywork being made of reinforced carbon fiber lightens the 812 Superfast, while the reinforced part of the carbon fiber bodywork equation keeps the chassis stiff. The new bodywork also includes a race car-style clamshell hood.Ferrari Monza SP2DRIVETRAINRear-Wheel DriveTRANSMISSION F1 7-Speed DCTHORSEPOWER800 hpTORQUE530 lb-ft @ 7000rpmENGINE6.5L V12 GasHowever, the driver shouldn't be spattered by flying insects, as Ferrari used aerodynamics to create what it calls a "Virtual Windshield." A more fun feature is that the SP Monza models have scissor doors, and according to Ferrari, the lack of door pillars and a windshield allows the driver "to attack corners with a freedom only experienced with a Formula 1 car." As for weight, Ferrari says the SP2 weighs 3,351 pounds dry (meaning without lubricants and fuel) which is impressive for a car with a V12 engine.Check out The Drop at our companion site HotCars for a chance to win the Vyper Elite Trio Package, a premium set of garage chairs! The example going up for sale has only 70 miles on the clock, meaning that as amazing as an SP2 Monza must be to drive, it's hardly lived up to its potential thus far. It's a crying shame, as Ferrari built the SP Monzas to be absolute thrill rides and odes to old-school race cars, not necessarily for setting the fastest times. But with the rarity and Ferrari pedigree, it's inevitable that at least one was stashed away into a collection.Should you find yourself with excessive cash in your pockets and ready to make an impulse purchase, the Car & Classic's "Collector's Edition" auction is online and active as we post this on March 20.
