A Chevy Malibu crashed in spectacular style while being chased by Arkansas cops. 140 mph wreck sent the Malibu rolling multiple times before stopping upside down. The female driver did survive the crash, but now faces several serious criminal charges. A routine traffic stop turned into a high-speed nightmare for one Chevy driver in the US last month after a cascade of bad choices. The woman at the wheel of the Malibu decided not to pull over and instead pushed on to over 140 mph (225 mph). Carnage ensued, though unlike too many Arkansas chases, this one didn’t result in a fatality. The incident happened on April 24 when a state trooper spotted the increasingly popular Malibu blasting through a 45 mph (72 km/h) construction zone at nearly 80 mph (129 km/h). The trooper activates his lights and sirens and gives his patrol car a bootful of gas, quickly catching up to the sedan, which by this time is doing 105 mph (169 km/h). Game over? Not yet. An Arkansas Trooper Tried One At 133 Instead of pulling over and facing the music, the driver decides to make a break for it, and from there, things escalate quickly. The trooper easily keeps pace with the Malibu as the pair hit 140 mph, but the panicked Chevy driver is moving erratically, weaving across the lanes to dodge other vehicles. That kind of speed doesn’t leave a lot of margin for error and it doesn’t take long for things to go very wrong. As the Malibu approaches a right-hand bend at 140 mph, the cop wisely eases a little on the gas, but the runaway driver keeps the hammer down. In the middle of the curve the Chevy drifts into the left-hand shoulder, kicking up dust before snapping back. That sudden correction seems to unsettle the car, and the next thing we see is the chased car smashing front-end first into the wire guard rail before disappearing into a cloud of dust. When the dust clears, bits of bumper and trim are raining from the sky and the car is barrel rolling down the highway, eventually landing on its roof, music still blaring from the stereo. Driver Survived, But Her Record Won’t The driver, later identified as Krista Bunch, was trapped inside the overturned vehicle and had to be extracted by emergency crews. Incredibly, she survived the crash and was taken to a nearby hospital before being released into custody. According to the police report, she later admitted she got “spooked” and was in a rush over a personal matter. Now she’s got a rather more serious personal matter, because she’s facing a long list of charges, including fleeing, speeding, reckless driving, and criminal mischief. It’s a dramatic reminder that no matter how fast you go, you’re not outrunning physics. Arkansas State Police/YouTube Police Pursuits
