Stellantis has issued a recall covering more than 61,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs built between 2019 and 2023. The problem is a faulty two-speed power transfer unit that can fail internally without warning. What Can Go WrongThe power transfer unit is what routes torque to all four wheels. When it fails, the driver can suddenly lose driving power. That is not a situation you want to discover on the highway or on a trail far from help. Before complete failure, the vehicle may show warning messages on the dash. Owners may also notice unusual noises or vibrations, or notice the vehicle handling differently than normal. Do not ignore those signs. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration documented the scope of the problem. Between January 2020 and March 2026, the agency recorded 9 customer assistance records, 387 warranty claims, 5 field reports, and 16 service records tied to this issue. But a remedy was not announced until now.Which Vehicles Are AffectedThe recall covers 2019 through 2023 model year Jeep Cherokees. More than 61,000 vehicles are included. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov to confirm whether your specific unit is in the recall. What Comes NextStellantis has not finalized a repair yet. NHTSA notes that a remedy is still under development. Owner notification letters are scheduled to go out by June 25, 2026. A second letter will follow once the fix is ready. In the meantime, pay attention to any warning lights, odd sounds, or vibration. If your Cherokee starts behaving strangely, get it to a dealer. Do not wait for a letter to arrive if something already feels off. You can also contact Chrysler customer service directly to ask about your vehicle's status. Why This Matters for Off-Road UseA power transfer unit failure is serious on any road. Off-road, it is more dangerous. Losing drive power on a trail, on a slope, or in a remote area creates real risk. If you use your Cherokee for overlanding or trail work, take this recall seriously and get your VIN checked now. NHTSA recall information and VIN lookup are available at nhtsa.gov. Chrysler can also be reached through the dealer network or their customer service line.
