2027 Jeep Wrangler Smoky Mountain Edition: What Buyers Should Know Before OrderingJeep rolled out the tenth installment of its Twelve 4 Twelve Wrangler series on Thursday, and for once the reveal didn't happen on the 12th. Drop No. 10 got pushed to August 20 so it could land at the 14th annual Smoky Mountain Invasion in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee — a schedule change Jeep flagged a week in advance. The result is the 2027 Wrangler Smoky Mountain special edition, a four-door Willys wearing topographic hood decals, gloss black wheels and a mama-bear-and-cub medallion on the shifter. It's a nicely executed appearance package. It's also named after a place where driving off the pavement will get you a federal citation. What you actually getPer Jeep's announcement, the Smoky Mountain builds on the four-door Willys and is limited to the 2.0-liter turbo four or the 3.6-liter V6, both with the eight-speed automatic. Jeep's 2026 Wrangler specs put the turbo four at 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft and the V6 at 285 hp and 260 lb-ft. Note what's missing: the six-speed manual, which the V6 still offers elsewhere in the lineup. A heritage tribute built on the Willys badge, sold exclusively with a torque-converter automatic, is a small irony worth naming.Related ArticlesKTM Recalls 6,257 Husqvarna and GasGas Dirt Bikes Over Rear Brake Calipers That Can Crack Mid-RideCédric Sbirrazzuoli, the Ferrari Racer Conquest Only Needed Four Times a Year, Dies at 39 After Cancer BattleAdvertisementAdvertisementHardware is standard Willys: Dana 44 front and rear axles, a locking rear differential, 4.10 gears, steel rock rails and a trailer hitch. Tires are 33-inch BFGoodrich KO2 All-Terrains with 35s optional. Visually it's Smoky Mountain hood-side decals, 17-inch smoky black wheels, a gloss black seven-slot grille, and body-color hardtop and fender flares.Inside, Jeep went further than usual for a decal drop. The Black Ferndale cloth seats get an embossed texture and deeper bolsters, with the upper bolsters carrying a 1941 Willys parachute graphic — the same airdrop motif running through the whole Twelve 4 Twelve campaign. Terracotta stitching, metallic Blaze Orange accents, smoked anodized trim rings, a swing-gate plaque with the parachute over a star field, and that bear-and-cub shifter medallion round it out. Heated seats, heated wheel and dual-zone climate are standard. The $80 questionJeep says the package runs $80 above a "popularly equipped" Wrangler Willys. That's a great headline number and a nearly meaningless one, because Jeep doesn't define the baseline. Body-color hardtops and body-color fender flares are normally cost options — when Jeep launched the Whitecap drop in December, the equivalent content pushed the Sahara version to $2,690 and the Rubicon to $3,185 over base. So "popularly equipped" is doing heavy lifting here. The honest read: if you were already going to check the painted-top and painted-flare boxes, the Smoky Mountain graphics and interior cost you almost nothing. If you weren't, your out-the-door number moves a lot more than eighty bucks. Price the two builds side by side before you sign anything.Things owners should think about before orderingBody-color panels change your repair math. Textured black plastic flares are consumable — you scrape a rock, you shrug. Painted flares and a painted hardtop turn the same scrape into a body-shop line item with color match and blend time. On a vehicle this cheap to damage and this expensive to repaint, that shifts your collision deductible calculus and nudges you closer to a total-loss threshold on a moderate hit. Worth a five-minute call to your carrier before you spec it.AdvertisementAdvertisementThose 4.10 gears are sized for 33s. Going to the optional 35s costs you roughly six percent of your mechanical advantage — 4.10 gearing on 35s behaves like about 3.87 on 33s. Factory 35s come with the speedometer and shift calibration sorted from Toledo. Do the same swap yourself later and you'll need a tuner or a dealer recalibration, or your odometer will under-report mileage and your speedometer will lie to you. That matters for warranty records and resale disclosure, not just tickets. The tires are last-generation. BFGoodrich launched the KO3 in 2024 as the KO2's successor, with a new compound and better wear and snow numbers. OE fitment lags aftermarket availability, so the Smoky Mountain ships on KO2s. They're still severe-snow rated and still very good. Just don't pay a premium expecting the newest thing, and know your replacement set in four years will probably be KO3s.About that nameHere's the part nobody in the press release mentions. Under 36 CFR 4.10, operating a motor vehicle inside a National Park Service unit is prohibited except on park roads, in parking areas, and on routes specifically designated for off-road use — and those designations can only be made in national recreation areas, national seashores, national lakeshores and national preserves. Great Smoky Mountains is a national park. There is no legal wheeling inside it. Not on a fire road, not in a creek bed, not anywhere. The region's history here is instructive. The Forest Service shut down the Upper Tellico OHV system in the nearby Nantahala National Forest over sediment running into brook trout water, and a federal judge upheld the closure in 2012 after four-wheel-drive groups sued. Roughly 39 miles of trail went away and hasn't come back. Southern Appalachian dirt is thin, wet and erodes fast, which is why the legal wheeling near Pigeon Forge is mostly on private ground.Related ArticlesCalifornia's Replacement Tire Rules Explained: Dates, Exemptions and What Enthusiasts Keep Getting WrongThe Bonneville Octavia at 15: The Record Škoda Doesn't Mention LosingAdvertisementAdvertisementWhat the park does offer a Wrangler is a genuinely good gravel-road network, and the park's seasonal road schedule is the document to read. Parson Branch Road — one-way, eight miles, high-clearance recommended — runs May 1 to November 9. Rich Mountain Road opens April 10. Both close for winter. That's the real use case for this truck in its namesake park: unpaved, scenic, and entirely within the rules. Two more practical notes. Since March 2023 the park has required a parking tag for any vehicle stopped more than 15 minutes — $5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual, tied to your plate and non-transferable. And the park holds about 1,900 black bears, which is charming on a shifter medallion and less charming when one is standing in the road on a blind Cades Cove curve at dusk. Great Smoky Mountains drew 11,527,939 visits in 2025, more than double the next-busiest national park. Plan around the crowds, not through them. The bigger pictureJeep says the Invasion pulls nearly 50,000 people and 20,000 Jeeps, which makes it a smart place to launch a $200-ish-looking sticker-and-stitching package aimed squarely at people who already own Wranglers. That's the Twelve 4 Twelve playbook: open with a $79,995 Moab 392, then discover that the volume lives on the Willys. Two drops remain before the campaign wraps in October. If you're buying for resale, understand that Wrangler special editions historically hold value on hardware — axles, lockers, engines — not on graphics. A Smoky Mountain will depreciate like a Willys, because underneath it is one. Buy it because you like terracotta stitching and a bear on your shifter. Those are perfectly good reasons.Images Via: Jeep
