jeep already plans to discontinue sixth generation cherokeeThe sixth-generation Jeep Cherokee will be discontinued after just three model years, replaced by an all-new crossover built on Stellantis' STLA One platform, according to Automotive News. The vehicle will be the first U.S.-market model to use the architecture, with production slated to begin at the idled Belvidere, Illinois, plant before the end of the decade. The move makes the current KM Cherokee, relaunched for 2026 on the STLA Large platform, by far the shortest-lived generation in the nameplate's history. Its early retirement follows weak market performance. Jeep sold 10,570 Cherokees in the first half of 2026, a steep drop from the nearly 240,000 units moved in 2018. More than 11,200 new Cherokees are currently listed on AutoTrader, and the model has been the subject of five separate recalls this year.jeep already plans to discontinue sixth generation cherokeeStellantis is adding another $200 million to its Belvidere investment, pushing the total above $800 million. Belvidere Assembly is expected to build both the next-generation Cherokee and the Compass, though no timeline has been set for the Compass. Both nameplates were previously produced at the plant before Compass production moved to Toluca, Mexico, in 2016 and the fifth-generation Cherokee was discontinued in 2023, idling the facility.AdvertisementAdvertisementPreparations to reopen Belvidere have already begun, with more than $60 million spent on stamping, body, paint, and general assembly work, Stellantis told Automotive News. Cherokee pilot production is targeted for the first half of 2028, with retail production planned for the second half of 2029."Launching the next-generation Cherokee on STLA One allows us to deliver a more competitive product," CEO Antonio Filosa said in a statement.Details on powertrains, specifications, and any carryover componentry from the current crossover remain unannounced.Become an AutoGuide insider.
