If you haven't figured it out by now, Subaru is embracing the spirit of adventure in the naming of its newest vehicles. The popular Forester and Outback set the template long ago, followed by the Crosstrek and more recently the battery-electric Trailseeker and Uncharted.Today at the New York International Auto Show, the thematic nomenclature continues with the reveal of the 2027 Subaru Getaway, a three-row battery-electric SUV that "is perfect for a rapid getaway with room for the whole family on a blast through Yellowstone." Apologies in advance to the park rangers. Little Bit Of Subaru, Lot Of Toyota 2027-subaru-getaway-live-image-2This brings to four the number of Subaru battery-electric vehicles in the lineup, all developed in partnership with Toyota and starting with the Solterra, which debuted at the Los Angeles Auto Show in 2021. The Getaway shares most everything with the 2027 Toyota Highlander EV, which was revealed in February. Standard on the new Subie will be Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and 8.3 inches of ground clearance with X-Mode dual-mode system for better grip in deep snow, mud, and dirt, along with downhill assist control.Subaru says the name Getaway reflects "family-friendly versatility and utility," with a third row that seats two and, when folded, makes for a spacious cargo hold. The new EV rides on 19- or 20-inch rims. Biggest, Most Powerful Subaru Ever Subaru When the Getaway makes its way to Subaru dealerships later this year, it will be the brand's most powerful production vehicle ever, with 420 horsepower from electric motors on the front and rear axles. That's a big step up from the 338 horsepower in the 2027 Highlander, which also is rated at 323 pound-feet of torque. Subaru has not yet revealed the Getaway's torque rating. Both the Getaway and Highlander will use the same power packs – a 95.8-kWh lithium-ion battery at launch later this year, expected to deliver more than 300 miles of range, and a 77.0-kWh unit that will be available in the first half of 2027 (more info to come). Subaru isn't yet estimating range with the smaller battery, but Toyota says that unit in the Highlander is good for up to 287 miles per charge.Subaru As for the big difference in horsepower with the larger battery, it appears Subaru is prioritizing performance over range with its new three-row EV. Subaru says the Getaway will be able to get away to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds and can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Standard on the Getaway is the NACS charging port with charging speeds up to 150 kW, enabling charging from 10% to 80% in about 30 minutes. The NACS port enables the Getaway to replenish at 25,000 Tesla Superchargers across North America. Subaru says the standard on-board battery preconditioning system prevents lag while charging in the cold, even at 14º F. The Getaway will shine at night with its illuminated six-star Subie logo up front on all trim levels, and headlamps will have dedicated washers.Subaru The Getaway is designed for family fun, with USB-C charging ports for every row, cup and bottle holders for every seat, three-zone climate control, and generous space for cargo. The second-row bench means the Getaway can fit up to seven people, or six with the optional second-row captain's chairs. With the third row folded, the Getaway offers 45.6 cubes of cargo room, "more than the Kia EV9," Subaru notes.Standard is a 14-inch multimedia horizontal touchscreen offering Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. Two wireless 15W smartphone chargers are available up front. Interior ambient lighting is customizable and can be changed based on selected drive modes. EyeSight driver-assistance tech is plentiful as well, including pre-collision braking, lane change assist and adaptive cruise control.Like the 2027 Highlander, Subaru's three-row EV will come from Toyota's plant in Georgetown, Kentucky. What else can we expect as the Getaway product strategy unfolds? Subaru certainly doesn't have to follow Toyota's lead, but the Toyota bZ, which is essentially the same as the Subaru Solterra, is now offered with a bZ Woodland variant intended for, of course, spending time in the woods. We know Subaru owners like to do that, so a Subaru Getaway Wilderness sounds logical.Expect pricing and additional details to be announced closer to the Getaway's on-sale date.2027-subaru-getaway-live-image-4
