2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backBuchanan, Mich.-The last thing the Ram TRX needed was more power.Except, in a way, it did. The 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT, to give it its full name, is not the most powerful production truck the way the 2021 model was when Ram first shoved a Hellcat in its bread-and-butter.Nevermind the four-digit horsepower figures made possible by electrification: the Ford F-150 Raptor R now had 720 hp. Naturally, that couldn't stand. So the king of the dinosaurs is back, with more power and just as much mind-bending off-road capability as before.Quick TakeBlessed with incredible high-speed prowess off-road and the sort of thirst you'd expect of a three-ton, 777-horsepower truck, there is nothing subtle about the TRX. And that's the point2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT: All The Details2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT: All The DetailsView GalleryAdvertisementAdvertisement34 photosWhat's New for 2027?Beyond the extra 75 hp? Not a whole lot: the rest of the package still consists of a wider stance, performance-focused exterior tweaks, and serious under-the-skin upgrades to make conquering dunes easy. The trick Bilstein BlackHawk e2 shocks remain the unsung heroes of the story, with remote reservoirs and precise control of bound and rebound. The interior sees a further shift upmarket, and there's the expected bump in technology too-including Ram's hands-free highway drive assist.2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backExterior Style:It's a Ram 1500. We all know what it looks like. The TRX adopts the tweaked front-end design that all 1500s received for 2025, and then bolts on the wider flares and big-scoop hood of before, replete with mandated amber clearance lights. There's a slight resurfacing done to the lower bumper around the recovery hooks as well. 35-inch all-terrain rubber wraps chunky, beadlock-capable wheels. Arguably the biggest change from before? The addition of an SRT badge, now that Stellantis has officially revived the high-performance division.AdvertisementAdvertisementRam will offer a Bloodshot Night Edition which gives the truck's top half a gloss black finish, along with a hand-painted red stripe down the center. This special edition also gets unique finishes for its wheels and a red tint to its interior carbon fiber.2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backPowertrain and Fuel Economy:As Ram's engineers tell it, this is essentially a Redeye powertrain now. Higher fuel pressure, a higher redline, the upgraded valvetrain: it all adds up to the full 777 horsepower experience. Not that one needs to hold the gears to 6,500 rpm to achieve maximum thrust: the Hellcat makes power everywhere. A launch control button where lesser 1500s' shifters sit-the TRX sticks to a traditional PRND lever-makes it even easier to hit the official 3.5-second run to 60 mph (97 km/h).And the noise, oh boy the noise. The big Stellantis V8 is already capable of a classic soundtrack, the sort that conjures up images of drive-in diners and gravity-defying pompadours. That characteristic supercharger whine almost drowns it out when hustling, a focal point unlike any other modern supercharged engine. (Not that there are a lot.) The eight-speed auto does great work on its own, but switching to manual and using the metal paddles can be fun too; it even brings shift lights up in the instrument cluster.Another feature that feels suitably old school: fuel economy, or the almost complete lack of it. Ram quotes a combined 12 mpg (19.8 L/100 km), and I barely see better than that on the highway.2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backHandling and Drivability:With no major changes to the suspension, the TRX behaves in the dirt just how I remember it: freakishly capable, like a rally car that's been mainlining creatine for a year. It's barely bothered by alternating yumps that would send a lesser vehicle off-course. Ram built a custom off-road track for us to play in complete with two jumps and it sails through both with ease. Those trick shocks and the 14 inches (36 cm) of suspension travel mean the TRX touches down not like an overgrown lizard, but with the grace of a bird.AdvertisementAdvertisementWhat's more, it's genuinely fun and adjustable in the corners. Yes, all that power helps, allowing the driver to tweak the tail out as desired, especially in Baja drive mode. But there's also good, consistent weighting to the steering, so it's easy to judge. That trustworthiness translates to the road. Okay, there is the near-constant concern of whether the TRX will actually fit on the road, but the flexibility that makes it so fun on loose surfaces translates to poorly paved ones as well. And this is rural Michigan; poorly paved surfaces are the default. The TRX gobbles up the road while maintaining composure in a way that many sports cars would struggle to match.2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backRide Quality and Comfort:Like I said: it's comfortable. Resist the urge to dig into the throttle and awaken the beast underhood and SRT's new truck is almost subtle. Almost. There's more road hum on the highway but beyond that this is a typical truck in that regard. Body motions are kept in check, with exception to heavy braking, where the nose does tilt noticeably.Being a modern full-size pickup, the TRX has a massive cabin, easily capable of shuttling around a driver and four other adults. The front seats have increased bolstering to keep bodies in place during adventures but are just as comfortable as the thrones in lesser 1500s.2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backInterior Style and Quality:Ram upped the lux-truck game with the Tungsten, so the brand knows how to do swanky pickups. The TRX now comes in just one all-in trim, and thus has everything a Tungsten would. This includes plenty of leather and suede all over the cabin, including the A-pillars and headliner, a TRX first. The front seats aren't just heated and ventilated: they have a massage function too.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe design has a bit of that mid-2010s blobbiness that once permeated all then-FCA models: peep the instrument cowl and controls to the left of the touchscreen. No complaints about fit and finish however, with every piece feeling solid. A new badge on the center console frames real metal under the glass, and even includes a cross-section of the Hellcat V8.2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring back2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backTech and Safety:Ram's tall infotainment screen remains a good one, easy to use and view at a glance, especially with the redundant physical buttons wrapping around its perimeter. Pairing a phone is easy, though the native navigation also works well.A digital instrument cluster is much the same story, with lots of selectable information along with quick response times. There's also a head-up display for even more easy-access info.Unlike Chevy and Ford, Ram includes access to its highway drive assist on its performance pickup. I get a brief stint with it and find no issues.Value, Dollars, and Sense:The TRX is now firmly a six-figure truck on either side of the border, with a starting price of $102,790 in the US and $147,990 CAD in Canada. The only real options buyers have are color and whether or not they want the Bloodshot Night special edition, which is an extra $9,995 ($13,495 CAD).AdvertisementAdvertisementWhile those are bonkers figures, the Ram still undercuts the Raptor R by a good ten grand.2027 ram 1500 trx srt first drive review roaring backFinal Thoughts: 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT First DriveIs the 2027 Ram 1500 TRX SRT completely silly, and so overqualified for what most owners will likely ever use it for? Sure. But that's true of most modern sports cars, too. This is the supercar for the pickup crowd, and from that perspective, the TRX still makes a certain amount of sense.Become an AutoGuide insider.
