More than 100 vehicles allegedly blocked Interstate 75 for burnouts. A fleeing BMW allegedly reached 140 mph during the pursuit. Four people were arrested following the interstate street takeover. Street takeovers have become a familiar sight in cities across America, but it’s rare to see one bring an interstate to a complete standstill. That’s exactly what happened early Saturday morning in Florida, where traffic cameras captured more than 100 vehicles blocking every northbound lane of Interstate 75 before one fleeing BMW M3 allegedly hit 140 mph (225 km/h) while trying to outrun state troopers. The entire incident, from the burnouts to the chase, was caught on camera. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the incident unfolded around 1:30 a.m. near mile marker 266 in Thonotosassa. Authorities say the group used the interstate itself as a staging area, bringing traffic to a halt while several drivers performed burnouts in the middle of the roadway. Traffic cameras recorded all northbound lanes blocked before troopers arrived with lights and sirens activated. As patrol cars approached, spectators sprinted back to their vehicles while dozens of cars scattered in every direction. Officers on the in-car radio mention that the livestream of the event ended as police arrived on the scene. No doubt, they were tracking the takeover via social media. Most participants managed to leave before officers could stop them, but one bright green M3 allegedly chose a far riskier escape route. According to investigators, the BMW accelerated rapidly as it headed north on I-75, weaving through traffic with its hazard lights flashing. Troopers say the car eventually reached approximately 140 mph (225 km/h) in a 70 mph (113 km/h) zone before exiting onto Bruce B. Downs Boulevard, running a red light, and finally stopping in a parking lot where officers made the arrest. The driver, identified as 25-year-old Yulian Lugo, was charged with aggravated fleeing to elude and participating in a coordinated street takeover. Three passengers, a 24-year-old and two 18-year-olds, were also arrested and charged under Florida’s street takeover law after investigators determined they were active participants in the event. All four were booked into the Hillsborough County Jail. Police say that the investigation into the event is still underway.
