Instead of being a purely electric vehicle automaker, it's shifted its stance to being a fully electrified car company by 2030. By that, it means plug-in hybrids will continue to be offered well into the 2030s.The Swedes are already preparing their next-generation plug-in hybrid powertrains. Its best-seller, the XC60, is set to get a new system soon with far greater battery range than its rivals. We could expect the same for the XC90, but what about the sedan and wagon front? Well, there might be an update on that.SH Proshots/AutoblogA PHEV Sedan Coming Soon?Various sources from China have spotted what is claimed to be a new Volvo sedan that will be unveiled soon. By the looks of things, it could be the successor of the S60, the company's long-running alternative to the usual Germans. If so, this should continue Volvo's line of compact executive sedans, dating back to the '60s with the 140 Series.AdvertisementAdvertisementIf this is truly a Volvo product, then the spy shots show a very crucial piece of evidence. A snap of the car's underchassis reveals an exhaust system. Given the brand's roadmap, this is likely to be a plug-in hybrid, and supporting that are glimpses of bright orange cables under the car.Spy Shots: Volvo S70 PHEV sedan for ChinaThis is the third locally-developed Volvo after the EM90 MPV and the Volvo XC70 SUV.It is likely based on the Lynk & Co 10 PHEV. The size and proportions seem about right. The XC70 is based on the Lynk & Co 08, the EM90 is based on… pic.twitter.com/C3seASGZdl— Tycho de Feijter (@TychodeFeijter) August 9, 2026A Name From the PastOf course, Volvo isn't confirming (or denying) any of its plans for its sedans at the moment, although the retirement of the S60 means the company currently doesn't have an entry in the compact executive market. The possible new sedan should soon solve that, but we might have to wait a while before the full reveal. As for the name, it has been suggested that it might be called the S70. The moniker was used from 1996 to 2000, and it was essentially a heavily updated version of the popular and iconic 850. It was eventually succeeded by the S60, and Volvo stuck with that name ever since.VolvoPossible PlatformGiven Volvo's long-standing partnership with Chinese automaker Geely, we wouldn't be too surprised if the new sedan will utilize any of the current PHEV platforms co-developed by the two brands. There are two possible candidates for that, namely CMA Evo and CMA 3.0.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe CMA Evo is currently being used on the revived XC70, and so far, it's been a fairly popular model over in China. That said, it's still unknown if there are any plans to export it out of China. Meanwhile, the CMA 3.0 is the newer of the two platforms, and it's underpinned a variety of Lynk & Co products, as well as the mid-size Smart vehicles.Unless Volvo plans to produce this sedan outside of China, the S70 might have a difficult time making it stateside. Still, a new sedan from Volvo is welcome news whether it makes it to America or not.Lynk & CoThis story was originally published by Autoblog on Aug 11, 2026, where it first appeared in the News section.
