Volvo’s New Luxury Sedan Will Be One Of The Best

With the EX90 finally in production and on dealer lots, Volvo is shifting its attention to the launch of its other, more traditional flagship, the ES90 sedan. Surprisingly, not much has come out about the ES90 since we heard about its development a little more than a year ago. With the reveal just over a week away, though, the Swedish automaker is dropping teasers and details, and it sounds like it will be an impressive machine.

Volvo's First Production 800-Volt Battery Pack

We were expecting the ES90 to share an awful lot from the EX90. After all, if you've already got one large vehicle on the platform, why not make it two? It may still share a fair few parts, but the battery isn't one of them. Rather than the EX90's 400-volt battery pack, the ES90 has an 800-volt one. This will enable the sedan to take better advantage of 350-kW DC fast chargers. Volvo claims the car can charge from 10% to 80% in 20 minutes, which is 10 minutes faster than the EX90.

As for range, Volvo claims 435 miles on a full charge. Keep in mind, that number is on the WLTP cycle, which tends to be optimistic. Assuming that the ES90 will make its way to the U.S., the range will certainly be lower. We can get some idea of what the EPA range might be by doing a little math. The ES90 gets 11.5% more range than the EX90. Applying that to the EX90's EPA range, and the ES90 should come in around 346 miles of range.

2025 Volvo EX90 First Drive Review: The Electric Flagship Is Worthy - Mostly

The EX90 is an electric flagship with a premium interior and ample features for a tech-savvy vibe, but some parts of it will take some getting use to.

What We Know And What We Don't

Beyond these specifications, Volvo hasn't revealed much else, save for the fact that it will be a sedan and have an on-board computer with hardware from Nvidia. A previous report pegged the dimensions as a couple of inches taller and wider than the current S90. It also said that, in typical EV fashion, the wheelbase would be a couple of inches longer than the S90, but the overall length a couple of inches shorter.

Volvo's Finally Got An Answer For The BMW i5

Volvo's first electric sedan is days away, and it's coming with a big brain.

The teaser images Volvo provided also give us a decent preview of the styling. The profile is mostly classic Volvo, with blunted front and rear ends and a simple roof line and signature rear quarter glass. It's quite clear Volvo is trying to maximize the amount of interior space available within the car's footprint. Compared to the S90, the nose is much shorter, and the roof doesn't start tapering to the trunk until the absolute last minute. Volvo managed to translate its SUVs' split tail lights with vertical elements to the sedan, incorporating lights up in the rear window area. The teaser images also reveal the LiDAR sensor on the roof, along with other cameras. We had no doubt Volvo would be incorporating lots of sensors and driver aids, but seeing these components confirms them.

We still have a lot to learn, such as the actual battery capacity, what motors will be offered, and of course what it looks like when not obscured by darkness. We'll have those answers soon, as the reveal is set for March 5.
