Report Says Volvo Replacing EX40 With EX50 in U.S.MotorTrendVolvo is working on bringing a new small crossover to the U.S. According to Automotive News, the Volvo EX50 will replace the EX40 in the American market and arrive in fall 2027. The publication also reports that the EX50 will ride on Volvo's lower-cost, modular SPA3 architecture, which underpins the EX60 and supports faster charging times.Volvo is in the middle of reshuffling its U.S. EV lineup. The automaker initially planned to import the affordable EX30 from China, but U.S. restrictions on Chinese-built EVs prompted Volvo to shift production of its smallest electric crossover to Belgium. Just a few months later, however, tariffs imposed by the Trump administration across multiple industries hurt the model's profitability, leading Volvo to discontinue the EX30 and EX30 Cross Country after the 2026 model year.Volvo now offers the EX40, EX60, and EX90 electric crossovers in the U.S. The EX50, an all-new model in the manufacturer's global lineup, will be taller and longer than the EX40, according to Automotive News. It is expected to be roughly the size of a Tesla Model Y, which would also put it up against small electric crossovers such as the Genesis GV60. A spokesperson for the U.S. market did say the automaker "will continue to pursue growth in electric vehicles."Also according to Automotive News, Volvo will build the EX50 at its new plant in Slovakia, which will have an annual production capacity of 250,000 vehicles. The $1.3 billion facility is now under construction and is scheduled to begin producing cars next year. Sister brand Polestar is also expected to build the Polestar 7 SUV there beginning in 2028.The EX50 will ride on the same architecture as the Volvo EX60, which is beginning to arrive at U.S. dealerships. We expect the smaller crossover to inherit some of the EX60's technology, including its 800-volt electrical architecture and the ability to charge from 10 to 80 percent in as little as 16 minutes.
