More than 74,000 Dodge Durangos face another recall over detached rear spoilers. FCA investigated after repaired Durangos showed potential for spoiler detachment. No crashes or injuries are known, but a permanent fix remains unavailable. There are recalls owners can probably put off until their next oil change. A rear spoiler that could detach and become road debris is not one of them. Chrysler is recalling 74,578 2021-2023 Dodge Durangos for exactly that issue. Oh, and this is the third time – and the remedy isn’t available yet. That’s right, some of the SUVs included here have seen two other recalls for the same problem. The weirdest part is just how this all came about. FCA began investigating after field data indicated that the previous recalls for spoiler detachment weren’t successfully fixing the issue. Now, it’s gone a step further by issuing a recall, admitting that there’s still potential for a safety problem. When the liftgate opens and closes, the spoiler can strike the body of the SUV and over time become loose. The automaker says owners might actually hear that contact or pick up on a slight rattle while driving. If the spoiler does lose grip, it can become fresh road debris, which nobody wants. Owners have expressed frustration over the situation all over the web. At CarComplaints.com, one simply said, “My rear spoiler fell off going down the road, and was unable to find it.” That’s a bad day for everybody, and it’s what FCA is hoping to head off in the future. The sad part is that, as of now, there’s no sure fix for the problem, it seems. Dealers were scheduled to receive notice on August 20, while interim owner notices are expected to begin September 10. Durango owners should check their VIN and pay attention to any new liftgate noises, because apparently this spoiler has become considerably more high-maintenance than the SUV’s V8. As of July 29, FCA had logged eight customer-assistance records, 116 warranty claims, and 37 other service records potentially related to the issue across all markets.
