Ford's smallest pickup has never been offered with anything larger than a four-cylinder, but New York shop Tucci Hot Rods is changing that with a twin-turbocharged Coyote V8 build set to debut at November's SEMA Show in Las Vegas.tucci hot rods stuffs a twin turbo v8 into a ford maverickThe Maverick is currently sold with a choice of a 2.0-liter turbocharged four rated at 250 hp and 277 lb-ft, or a 2.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder with a combined 191 hp. Ford does not quote a total torque figure for the hybrid, saying only that its electric motor is good for up to 236 lb-ft. Those outputs cover most buyers, and Tucci Hot Rods is aiming higher. The build starts with the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, which replaces the old 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Fitting it was not a simple swap. Tucci says it had to cut away parts of the transmission tunnel and firewall to position the engine correctly, and it fabricated custom engine mounts to hold it in place.Rather than stop at a naturally aspirated Coyote, which can produce as much as 500 hp, Tucci Hot Rods plans to bolt a pair of turbochargers onto the 5.0-liter for substantially higher output.tucci hot rods stuffs a twin turbo v8 into a ford maverickThis is not the first Maverick the shop has worked on. Tucci showed a widebody Maverick at SEMA back in 2021, and the latest project appears to use that same truck. The company has also fitted a Ford Bronco with snow tracks. The upgrades are expected to extend beyond the powertrain, with revised brakes and suspension, interior tweaks, a fresh exhaust, and additional cooling all likely to feature on the finished truck.Ford will never build a factory V8 version of its cheapest pickup, so just enjoy this one for what it is.Become an AutoGuide insider.
