This Is Acura's Future, the Nexera Vision ConceptMIROAcura unveiled its Nexera Vision concept at the Quail today and the reaction is... controversial. Not just because of this one shape they uncovered, but because Acura calls this one shape "a new design direction inspired by the brand's challenger spirit—a defining tenet of Acura since its inception 40 years ago." Does that mean all future Acuras will look like this?Is that going to be good?MIROAcura sold 133,433 vehicles last year, down from the division's peak of 209,610 over 20 years ago in 2005. As Honda's luxury performance arm, the division can afford to be a bit stylish, maybe even controversial, but this?AdvertisementAdvertisementThe proportions are rearward, and the long, lowered snout looks ready to dig up ants for lunch. It's a little like a Czinger that's gone under the rear end of a truck in an accident.Born at the Acura Design California studio in Los Angeles under the guidance of Yasutake Tsuchida, the new Acura creative director and vice president of auto design, Acura says the Nexera (Next Era?) Vision "will influence the styling of future Acura models, beginning with the 4th-generation RDX Hybrid arriving in the coming years."MIRO"We are using the 40th anniversary of Acura as a springboard to our future, with the Acura Nexera Vision serving as the design language for future Acura models," said Tsuchida. "Our goal with this new design direction is to define Acura performance through disciplined proportions, sculpted form and the seamless integration of advanced technology, creating an expression that is both progressive and authentic to the brand."Ain't never seen nuthin' like this at the brand.AcuraPhotos show designers, all dressed in black, taking serious ganders at the rig. What are they thinking? Why are they all dressed in black? Are they mourning? Here's what Acura says:AdvertisementAdvertisement"The Acura Nexera Vision exudes confidence and high-performance capability through sculpted muscular surfaces and an aero-channel fascia. An active rear spoiler manages airflow across the rear decklid to enhance aerodynamic efficiency, high-speed stability and braking performance. The coupe's dual-hinge butterfly doors create a bold, dramatic entry, expressing Acura performance DNA from the first interaction."High-performance carbon ceramic Brembo brakes show through the 22-inch centerlock wheels, a first for Acura, with a distinctive 3D directional design and matte anodized finish with forged carbon fiber inserts. Forged carbon also forms the coupe's aero-channel fascia, rear diffuser, rocker panels, inner door structures and other performance details."Tsuchida offers more insight."To reinforce the new Acura styling identity, we developed a unique lighting signature inspired by the Acura 'A' mark—an unmistakable design element created to make this new era of Acura instantly recognizable," said Tsuchida. "The Nexera Vision sets the course for the next generation of Acura design, and we are committed to evolving that direction with clarity, consistency and purpose across future Acura products."MIROInside, the car "balancing spaciousness with precision-focused intimacy."AdvertisementAdvertisementFollowing its world premiere at the Quail, the Nexera Vision will be showcased at the historic Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance Concept Lawn on Sunday, August 16.Consider sending your thoughts on the model to Acura at acura.com/contact-us.
