When Pontiac followed up the original 1964 GTO, the goal was simple: make sure the car that launched the muscle-car craze wasn't remembered as a fluke. Six decades later, one heavily reworked example takes that ambition to an entirely different level. This Montero Red 1965 GTO convertible is currently up for grabs at no reserve on Hagerty Marketplace, and it pairs first-year Goat styling with a thoroughly modern, big-inch driveline.Photo credit: Hagerty MarketplaceThe heart of the build is a 455-cubic-inch V8 that has been bored .030 inch over and fitted with a classic Tri-Power intake, though the carbs are largely for show. Hidden underneath is a FiTech fuel-injection setup feeding forged Ross pistons, Eagle H-beam rods, and a custom LSM roller cam, all topped with KRE aluminum heads. On the dyno in 2023, the combination produced a stout 507 horsepower and 571 lb-ft of torque.Photo credit: Hagerty MarketplaceBacking up the engine is an M22X four-speed manual with a 2.98 first gear, a McLeod twin-disc clutch, and a rebuilt Hurst shifter, with a 3.08-geared 10-bolt rear axle out back. The chassis has been brought up to date as well, with a front disc-brake conversion and vacuum-assisted booster, boxed rear control arms, a sway bar, and 15-inch Vision "Hurst Dazzler" wheels wrapped in red-line tires.AdvertisementAdvertisementThe presentation matches the mechanical effort. The car was refinished in its factory-correct Montero Red and now wears a premium cloth convertible top over reupholstered black patterned vinyl. Details abound, from CNC-machined billet valve covers engraved with the Pontiac logo and re-chromed bumpers to a re-chromed center console, LED headlights, and a discreet modern audio system. The seller, who has owned the car for more than two decades, calls it one of the finest '65 GTOs in the country.Photo credit: Hagerty MarketplaceWith 14 bids already pushing the high bid to $67,500 and no reserve standing between bidders and the keys, this restomod Goat looks set to find a new home when the auction ends. You can view the full listing, all 222 photos, and the nine videos on the Hagerty Marketplace auction page.⚡️ Read the full article on MotoriousSign up for the Motorious Newsletter.
