Porsche sets another lap record, this time at Road Atlanta in a 911 GT2 RS.The 1:22.649 beat the record set last year by a Corvette ZR1 by two-tenths of a second. The GT2 RS had a Manthey Kit, which went on sale here last year.Somewhere down the line, we will stop publicizing every new lap record at every race track all over the world. But not yet!Porsche took the same model 911 GT2 RS (991.2) that set a record at the Nürburgring a couple weeks ago out on the track at Road Atlanta, and guess what? It set another lap record!“The 911 GT2 RS (991.2) equipped with the optional Manthey Kit and road-legal, Porsche approved Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R NO tires has set a benchmark lap time of 1:22.649 at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta, beating the previous production car lap record by 0.2 seconds,” Porsche said this morning. The previous production car lap record at RA was set last year by the 1,064-hp Corvette ZR1 at 1:22.85. Porsche beat it by two tenths.Porsche GT2 RS lap recordIn fact, there were three 911s and, recently, a bunch of other Porsches setting records at Road Atlanta:911 GT2 RS (991.2) with Manthey Kit: 1:22.649911 GT3 RS (992.1) with Manthey Kit: 1:23.932911 GT3 (992.2) with Manthey Kit: 1:24.639911 GT2 RS (991.2): 1:24,88—driver Randy Pobst911 GT3 RS (991.2): 1:26,24—driver Randy Pobst911 GT3 (992.1): 1:26,46—driver Patrick LongTaycan Turbo GT Weissach Package: 1:27.15—driver Patrick LongPanamera Turbo S E-Hybrid (G3.1): 1:30.98—driver Patrick LongPanamera Turbo S (G2.2): 1:31.51—driver Leh Keen718 Cayman GT4 (982): 1:32.24—driver Leh KeenTaycan Turbo S (J1.1): 1:33.88—driver Leh KeenCayenne Turbo GT (E3.2): 1:34.38—driver Patrick Long Porsche 911 GT2 RS lap recordTo put this in context, the all-out lap record at Road Atlanta is held by Le Mans winner and Ferrari F1 test driver Marc Gene, who did a 1:01.200 in a Ferrari F2003-GA during a 2018 exhibition. Davy Jones did a 1:08.639 in an IMSA GTP Jaguar XJR-14 in 1992. (Maybe you were there?) WEC and IMSA prototypes hold most of the top 100 fastest times at the track, but those are all race cars. The 911 GT2 RS (991.2) with Manthey Kit is one you could have gone down to your Porsche dealer and bought as recently as 2019, albeit not very cheaply. Manthey Kits have been available in the US since last year via Manthey-certified Porsche dealerships throughout the United States. MSRP for the 911 GT3 RS Manthey Kit is $116,160; the 911 GT2 RS Manthey Kit is $113,140. “Taking advantage of the upgrades to suspension and aerodynamics, the 2019 911 GT2 RS made a 2.2-second improvement over the standard model which was lapped at the same track on the same model of tire in 2019,” Porsche noted.Porsche brand ambassador and former factory racer Joerg Bergmeister was at the wheel and reflected on the impressive performance: “Even almost 10 years after its introduction, the power delivery of the twin-turbo flat-six engine is still thrilling. The enhancements to chassis and increased amount of downforce allowed me to carry speed deep into the corners and accelerate early, giving me great confidence—which is also a benefit for regular drivers who take to the track."But the question remains: will two tenths convince you to buy a Porsche over a Ferrari or McLaren? Who knows? These things are still kind of fun, aren’t they? Let us know in the comments.
