You'll be hard-pressed to find a car enthusiast who doesn't like any kind of performance car. Plenty of the world's most prestigious marques make them, and they come in all sorts of different flavors. That's especially the case with sports cars. These cars are designed to give the best experience that you can get out of a high-performance car. But, life isn't always rosy if you do take the plunge and go for something sporty with great performance. Why is that? Well, you're about to find out... Performance Cars Often Don't Have The Best Reliability via Bring A TrailerIf you're in the market for a performance car, you've often got to accept a few compromises. Unfortunately, one of those is often reliability. The trade-off to having a car that's optimized for pure performance and driving fun is that it's much more difficult to look after. The mechanical and electrical parts can be more temperamental. On more modern cars, software can have issues. Parts can also be a lot more expensive to buy, and sometimes near-impossible to source in the first place.Things don't have to be this way, however. There is one car out there on the market that's a proper, high-performance sports car, but without all those difficulties with reliability. It's also got the bonus of having a prestige badge, and a prestige nameplate! The BMW 840i Is A Surprisingly Great Grand Tourer BMWThere was quite a bit of fanfare at the launch of the rebooted BMW 8 Series. But that fanfare quieted down over time, and people have forgotten about it a little. That's actually a real shame, as this car is fantastic! That's even the case with the 6-cylinder 840i base model. Available with both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive (xDrive), the BMW 840i's turbocharged inline-6 produces 335 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. That's enough to get the rear-wheel drive version from 0-60 in 4.7 seconds and the xDrive version from 0-60 in 4.4 seconds. As you'd hope from a grand tourer with a BMW badge on the front, it's also supremely comfortable and drives fantastically well. The only mildly disappointing part about the BMW 840i's performance is that it only has a limited top speed of 155 mph. You can't have that top speed limiter raised via paying a bit more money on the options list either, like some other BMW models. But that genuinely great 0-60 time makes up for it, as does its comfort and handling. The 8 Series Coupe Also Had Faster, V8-Powered Variants BMWWhile we'll be focusing on the 6-cylinder base model 8 Series here, it is worth mentioning a bit about the faster V8-powered models that sat above it in the range. For a bit more money, you can get the M850i with its twin-turbocharged V8 and xDrive all-wheel drive. There were also the properly fast M8 and M8 Competition models. All these cars have differently-tuned versions of the same 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged S68 V8, which has become a staple of high-performance BMWs and higher-performance Land Rover models. These include the current generation BMW M5 (where it's used as part of a plug-in hybrid setup), the controversial XM SUV (where, again, it's part of a hybrid setup) and the latest iteration of the Range Rover Sport SV. The 8 Series Has A Proper Racing Pedigree Considering the BMW 8 Series is supposed to be a grand tourer, how come it's genuinely one of the best to drive in its market? Well, that's because BMW was crazy enough to take it racing! To show they were truly serious about the 8 Series being on the performance end of BMW's range, it got its engineers to create the M8 GTE race car. Competing in the now-defunct GTE class in sports car racing, this car quickly became a fan favorite. That was likely mainly due to its almost comical size compared to the cars it raced against, sparking many an internet meme! Furthermore, the M8 and M8 Competition models are actually the result of making a road-legal version of this race car. The BMW 840i Is Known To Be Incredibly Reliable BMWReliability isn't something you'd necessarily think of when it comes to the BMW 8 Series. But, it's a car that's gained a reputation for having the kind of reliability that you'd only usually see from the Japanese manufacturers! The 2024 BMW 8 Series received a quality and reliability score of 85/100 from JD Power. Just off that metric alone, that makes it one of the most reliable sports cars around. But it doesn't stop there. Plenty of people with experience of the 8 Series have noted how reliable it tends to be. They also cite the 840i and 840i xDrive as being the most reliable variants out of the bunch, thanks to its turbocharged inline-6 being a more bulletproof powertrain than the twin-turbo V8s of the more powerful models. The BMW 840i Is Becoming A Performance Car Bargain BMWThe BMW 840i is a very expensive car brand new. You can expect to pay around $90,800-$93,500 for the rear-wheel drive version brand new, and the xDrive version is around $96,500. That's at base MSRP as well. If you decide to load up on the options list, you could be paying well over $100,000! But used examples are starting to go for very attractive prices. The average used value for an 840i right now is $61,500. Yes, that is still quite expensive. But for how much car you're getting for that money and with the knowledge of how reliable it is, it's a pretty good deal.Sources: BMW, Classic.com, JD Power, Land Rover, Reddit (r/BMW)
