Jump LinksLeave all the "the Toyota GR Supra is a BMW" comments at the door. Toyota's GR Supra is one of the most compelling sports car options on the market today. Its B58 power plant offers impressive levels of performance, and that vocal soundtrack is paired with an exterior design that is oh so pleasing to the eye. However, while the B58-powered Toyota GR Supra is given a lot of love, there is a version of the Toyota GR Supra that is criminally underappreciated and can now be had for nearly as much as a brand-new Mazda Miata. A Four-Cylinder-Powered Toyota Supra Toyota Although it is down two cylinders and more than 100 hp in comparison to the B58-powered Toyota GR Supra, the four-cylinder-powered Toyota GR Supra is still a compelling sports car. The world waited nearly two decades for the revival of the Toyota Supra name after the Mk4 Toyota GR Supra bowed out and would posthumously garner a cult-like following. Initially, two engines were available. One was equipped with the famous B58 six-cylinder engine, while the other featured BMW's turbocharged four-cylinder engine.ToyotaUnsurprisingly, this derivative was offered at a lower price point, but it didn't debut alongside the B58 power plant in the USA. It was initially offered in Japan, but would make its appearance in the States for the 2020 model year and onward. However, the first-ever Toyota Supra powered by a four-cylinder engine only arrived in the US in 2021.The engine at the core of this Toyota Supra variant was BMW's B48 engine, which is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that BMW has produced since the mid-2010s. The specific variant of this four-cylinder engine offered in the Toyota Supra was also shared with the BMW Z4 sDrive30i and is one of the more powerful configurations of the B48 engine. While it does lack the same power as the larger B58 engine, the smaller engine results in a loss of roughly 200 lbs in comparison, being notably lighter at the front end, which gives the feeling of better turn-in abilities and directional change. Besides the engine configurations, the four-cylinder-powered Toyota Supra is mechanically identical to the derivative powered by BMW's B58 engine. With that said, it's surprising that today these underappreciated offshoots of the Toyota Supra sell for nearly as much as a brand-new Mazda Miata."At 3,181 lbs, the Supra 2.0 is more than 200 lbs lighter than its six-cylinder counterpart. With less weight on the nose, the Supra 2.0 feels slightly more eager to change direction." – Jared Rosenholtz, CarBuzz. Within Arms Reach Of The Miata's Pricetag Toyota Not only was it down on power, but there was a lot that Toyota omitted from the four-cylinder-powered version that was offered in the more potent B58-powered variant. Its lighter curb weight was the result of the 10-speaker sound system, electric seats, the adaptive suspension system, and the active differential. These are crucial elements to any driving experience. Still, the Toyota GR Supra 2.0 not having these features meant that, while it was marginally lighter, it was also offered at a low price. The 2021Toyota GR Supra 3.0 had an MSRP of $54,490, roughly $500 up from the previous model year's MSRP. In contrast, the Toyota GR Supra 2.0 had an MSRP of $42,990. For an additional $3,485, you could get the Safety & Technology package that would equip this Supra variant with a 12-speaker sound system, blind spot monitoring, and more.Toyota However, now a handful of years into production, the B48-powered Supra's value has been whittled down to a point where an example of this Supra variant can be sold for nearly as much as a brand-new Mazda Miata. Some of the lowest-priced examples currently listed for sale across various websites have been listed for as low as $32,607. This is an uncommon price because typically examples from the first two model years with roughly 40,000–55,000 miles range between $35,000 and $39,000, depending on condition. How It Compares To Other Four-Cylinder-Powered Sports Cars FordToyota discontinued the four-cylinder-powered Toyota Supra this year. Now, the model can only be found on used marketplaces, or some examples are still left on dealership lots. However, it should come as no surprise that it's not the only four-cylinder-powered sports car in this price bracket. Within Toyota's camp, the Toyota GR86 is positioned below the Supra in terms of performance, featuring a four-cylinder engine that produces 228 hp and 184 lb-ft. This results in a sprint time that is almost a second slower than the Supra.Mazda However, these are far more affordable on the used market than the Supra. The Mazda Miata is another choice, being the near-perfect sports car. Its power output is lower than the Surpa, but its used market value is also lower. We don't need to defend the Miata, given its long-standing reputation for being a fun, driver-focused performance car.The Ford Mustang, specifically the S550 generation, had its own four-cylinder offering in the form of the Ford Mustang EcoBoost, which sources its strength from a slightly larger, more powerful EcoBoost inline four-cylinder engine. Despite a difference in weight, the higher power output makes the Mustang as quick in a straight-line sprint as the Supra. That fact is compounded by the fact that it is also more affordable than the Supra on the used market, making it one of the most appealing alternatives to the B48-powered Toyota GR Supra. What About The Supra With The Engine That You Really Want? ToyotaAs you'd expect, the Toyota GR Supra with the B58 as its beating heart is more valuable and lusted after than its four-cylinder-powered counterpart. Former counterpart. While the Toyota GR Supra 2.0 had a pricetag that was within arm's reach of $40,000, the 2026 Toyota GR Supra 3.0 has an MSRP of $58,300, which may seem expensive, but it's a lot less than the $69,000 BMW M2 Coupe. It should come as no surprise that this version of the Toyota GR Supra demands significantly more than its lesser counterpart, the Toyota GR Supra 2.0. According to the CarBuzz Marketplace, the Supra 3.0 hasn't lost much value, and it's unlikely it ever will now that it is scheduled to go out of production.
